I took my 2004 Tacoma - now with a massive 37,000 miles on the Odo - to the dealer yesterday to deal with a check engine light that came on last Friday. It needed a part that wasn't in stock so they offered me a loaner. When I got to the dealership, they gave me this to take home.

I've been thinking about upgrading for awhile and this was a great chance to try out the Gen 3, albeit a base model. I really enjoyed it - and will miss it when I turn it back today. I'm planning on retiring in a few years so I will probably hold my old truck until then and then upgrade to a new Tacoma. With only 37,000 miles on my old one - and I'm the 3rd owner - it's still running well and since we only use it for hauling mulch and crewing for a hot air balloon business, I can't justify getting rid of it yet. But, oh is it tempting.

Dealers know how to tempt you :D

Also that is not a base model. SR is base. Your loaner is SR5

37,000 miles is nothing. I'd keep the first gen

    Agreed

As a owner of a 1st and 3rd gen, once he retired in a few years I don’t see a need to upgrade

Unless of course he wants to give himself a new present

You are absolutely correct - I messed up on the base versus SR%. It just doesn't have all the extras I would have added.

I am friends with the owner of the dealership. The service advisor just called to tell me that my truck is done - he didn't know I had a loaner Tacoma. I told him the owner will be OK with an even trade. He wasn't sure what to say to that. :)

You basically have a new truck without the electronic amenities. If you do plan on upgrading don't trade it in - sell it yourself. Could easily get about $15k +/- depending on what your 1st gen offers.

This is my 1st Gen - a little more worn since this was 4 years ago when I bought it.

I need the extra cab for chasing hot air balloons and especially if it's going to be my daily driver when I retire. But this truck has been great for us.

The check engine light was for the air flow sensor (?) - and I had them put on new front brakes since it was down to mins for safety inspection.

I was only kidding the advisor on the equal trade. But it made him pause for a few seconds. :)

I'm retired from the Army...but not retired totally, yet. I am the president of a small private college but plan on retiring for good in 3 years.

    Nice 1st gen.

The AccessCab is larger the 1st Gen extended cab. I'm 6ft with shorter legs / tall torso and fit back there pretty well.

I'd hang on to yours, if it was me.

Not bad for a 13 year old truck, huh? Of course, it's not as good looking as my '96 BMW Z3 that I bought new - it has 85k miles on it now.

I had a Z3M with the s52 motor. Then traded in on what they call the clown shoe Z3M coupe with the s54 motor. Motor blew when bearings went, before bmw issued the recall . Been away from them since

I need your dealership's customer service at mine!

The loaner I was given was a Nissan Altima from Enterprise. I can't haul nothin in that! It ended up having expired plates (which I got pulled over for) and they gave me a Jeep Patriot instead. But at least it had a button for 4x4? Not confident that button actually did anything though...

This is a SMALL private college with a SMALL endowment and the lowest tuition in PA - I drive a Subaru as my daily driver. As I was told when I first started working here 14 years ago...it's like one big happy family...which is why we get paid an allowance and not a salary. :)

If I take my truck in for service, I always get a truck loaner

Last time my 17 PRO was in for warranty work, I got a Tundra loaner 1794 edition.

By the time I was done with the tundra after 3 days, it likely needed new rear tires :D
