    Recovery gear:

Shovel (one where the spade is full size)
    Lighting
    Tools (10mm, 12mm, 14mm, 17mm, 19mm, 21mm covers 95% of the truck), especially a 3# hand sledge (sometimes referred to as a Machinist's Hammer)
    Hi lift Jack
    Tire plug kit
Tire vlv stems and extra cores
Drill with drill bits up to 5/8 at least.
    2 charged drill batteries
    Drill battery charger
Recovery straps, whether you have a winch or not
Zip-ties (LOTS). The standard 8" 40# will cover damn near anything. You can zip-tie them into a bundle, then zip-tie the bundle to almost anything in the engine bay
    Work gloves
    First aid
    Extra clothes (stashed)
    Extra food (stashed)
    Fire extinguisher
Air compressor that costs you at least $100
    Shackles (plural!)
    Water for you
    Water for the truck
    Extra water
    Extra fuel
    Bow saw
    Ratchet straps
Pieces of 2x4 and 2x6. Assorted lengths between 10" and 30"
    Spare lug nuts
    Spare lug studs
    Hose clamps
    JB Weld
Foil tape (Gorilla duct tape is okay, foil tape is better)
Cheap 50-foot 14awg grounded extension cord (reason here is that it has 3 strands of insulated 14awg wire, giving you 150 feet of spare wire in a nice, compact, double-insulated, durable package)
Leatherman (ALWAYS have a Leatherman! SuperTool is the best)
    C-clamp(s)
    Industrial hand cleaner
    Rags
Jack stand or big ass wood block
    U-joints
    Fuses
    Batteries (AA and AAA)
    Rags/towels
Baofeng handheld VHF/UHF radio (if a true emergency, you do not need a license to transmit)
    Blankets
    Tarps
    Rope
Spare bolts and nuts. (In a pinch, you can use one of your tow-hitch mounting nuts for the long UCA bolt)
    Headlamp bulbs
Leak sealer (I like the copper stuff)
Hylomar gasket maker (ask me about why Hylomar over RTV)
Delorme atlases for each state you go through and compass (learn to use a compass if you don't know how already)
Quart of white gas ("Camping Fuel") (because it ignites better than anything else......including gasoline)
    Backpacking stove with fuel
I'm sure I'm missing a shit-ton of other stuff. This should get you started. Some of these are non-negotiable items (shovel, 3# hand sledge hammer, fire extinguisher, Leatherman, first aid, compass, maps/atlasses, zip-ties, lug nuts and studs, others), some are optional (rope, jack stand, U-joints [because I've not heard of Toyota busting U-joints...we do tend to go through rear driveshaft tubes, though]).
If you're freaking out about where to put it all, remember there's more space in our trucks than people consider. Lots of stuff can be stashed in the engine bay (zip-ties, spare belts, some tools, spare fluids, leak sealer, wire, hose clamps......to name a fraction). Under the seats, in the door pockets, behind the rear seats, tied to things (like the cargo rail), and tons of space under the truck if you can figure a way to mount it securely. Of course, the best is to have a roof rack, bed rack, and rear bumper with swing-gates.

Two pairs of work gloves one pair mechanic gloves one pair leather gloves. I didnt get into detail about winch gear because this list is drafted assuming the rig in question has no winch.

Staticky like it's just over the squelch limit but still managing to come through weak. Wasn't sure if it was his radio or mine.

@goblue82 helluva list! Comprehensive at least, an oft best case scenario for many.

Exactly. This is more of a list for an actual overland trip of 100-200 or more miles off pavement away from the nearest town. You know the old saying "its better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it"
