Great choice. And also get a f/1.4 lens for close ups and that DOF! Also, a polarizer and a UV filter.

ok, so aside from global forum hatred of Ken Rockwell that I just learned, is his recommendation of the D40 over the D3000 based in anything valid?

He also claims the D200 just as good as the D40, but a lot heavier. If this is true at all, I might as well go for a used D200 with the 18-200mm.

You'll be happy with either brand and model. Remember it's the lens' that matter and that you'll have over the life of this, and future cameras. The technology is amazing at it's current point, but it is still quickly evolving. A few years will go by quickly and you'll probably be eyeing the next generation of body - so don't agonize too much over the body now. As a new person to photography, you're going to love the results of any of them.

You'll be happy with Nikon or Canon. If I were you though, I would consider buy used and save money. Especially in that there's a decent chance you'll be wanting a new body before you know it.

D90 It's worth the extra money.
The VR lenses are the best.

the d40 is a discontinued model. the d3000 is still in production..

whatever camera you get, make sure you have something like photoshop or sign up for picnik.com

here are two pictures I took with my d3000. one is straight from the camera and one has been edited (adjusted the saturation and exposure)

I have a friend who is a pretty avid photographer and she loves her D3000. I have a D5000 and I love it, but I'm pretty sure I'd b prefectly hapy wih D3000.
