    I'm A photographer and I shoot with a Nikon D300s and i love it.

Cannons are great cameras built by engineers and Nikon's are great cameras built by photographers.

I think you are going to love the D3000 it's a great camera for it's class.

Here is some samples of my work.

I'm pretty sure you always have to manually zoom. You can focus anytime.

I just read this thread and found it most interesting. I have had nikons for 15 plus years. They are fantastic. However other brands are also excellent. Dont bash the other guy. Its his choice.
Anyway i bought a d5000 package at b/b last christmas. Body 2 lens, and bag. $825. It is a great camera. If you put an 8 or 16 gig card in it lookout. You can shoot like a machine gun. My little girl loves it. When i let her shoot. She loves to just point and fire, no waiting.
I have bought from ebay and gotten some very, very good deals. You must check the seller out. And you should do your homework before you bid/buy. Never buy a grey market item. If is not nikon usa forget it. Nikon will not touch it. If the seller gives a 2/3 year warranty thats his warranty, not nikons.. Ebay dealers will say that they are nikon usa dealers or you can call 1 800 nikon usa and confirm it. My ebay dealer of choice is cameta camera. They are great. They have a deal with nikon on the returned units. They sell them as demos and state that. However, they are probably nikon refurbs, but they give the full regular nikon warranty.
I will tell you what happened 2 weeks ago.
I took out the 5000 and some of my other lenses to play with. I put the 70-200 sigma on and shot for awhile. It went on nice but it did not come off. In removing it i destroyed the pin contacts and its ring. I cried! I paid a kings ransom for the sigma and on ly used it on my n90 a few times. It was like new. Fortunately i did not hurt the 5000.
So you will say dummy. Well yes but i called nikon to check what fits. All the lenses i have are af nikons. The wonderful lady at nikon said yes but certain functions will not work. Well, so much for taking a womans advise. I called later and spoke to a male agent. He informed me that only afs lenses work on most digitals because the lenses has a motor drive in it. Hence, they are expensive
so i went to the web and sent it back direct to sigma usa. Within 1 week i had it back, new pins, ring, housing etc. Price to fix. Zero!!!. This lens was probably 8 plus years old. Bought on ebay from a private seller. My point here is that sigma stood behind it product probably because it was usa not grey market.
My point here is the digital nikons only use afs lenses. They have an internal motor and thats why they are so expensive.
I would like to get another lense or 2 but the cost has to be considered. If i had all the money i have in the nikons and lenses i have in the closet i could buy another dbl cab loaded sport truck.
Also remember everything changes. What you buy today in electronics is obsolete yesterday.
B/b and sears are listing the d5000 on sale in todays sunday paper ads.
    Sorry i got carried away....
