Cables ordered! went with 8" so I can plug them into stock 8 pin PCIE cables on the backside.

Now should I run a new line and play with the 3080 air cooled or just wait for the water block to arrive and then assemble everything.

    hmmmmmmmmm

Actually compared the card I got to other 3080s and I really lucked out:

Well my order wasn't on the latest import from ModMyMods so it'll likely be the 18th when the next shipment arrives. Hopefully it's on there and obviously with current events it's not that big of a deal.

Until then I ordered a heatsink and thermal pad to help control the backplate temps as they're pretty high.

    Forgot to share!

Snagged a new monitor as it was too good of a deal to pass up

Happened to walk by it at Costco

saw it was 1440p at 165 Hz, did a double take and it ended up on one of our carts!

So I decided to pony up and snag this on sale.

    https://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/AMD-Ryzen-9-5950X-vs-AMD-Ryzen-7-2700X/4086vs3958

It's 38% faster overall, and the next gen AMD processors have an LGA socket meaning I'll have to upgrade my MOBO if I went that route.

I should be pretty future proofed for years to come now.

The last pieces I would like one day are SSD storage to replace my HDD and a quieter PSU

I guess it's time to update my bios :bananadead:

After further research I'm in a dilemma. my MSI X570 A pro has weak VRMS which aren't the best for the 5950x.

The CPU is compatible with the motherboard, however the weak VRMS could throttle the CPU without proper cooling.

Technically I should upgrade my motherboard to have higher quality vrms, so that they don't throttle my cpu. The only reason I seized the deal was to avoid upgrading my MoBo, because if I was going to upgrade my cpu and MoBo I would just wait for the latest AMD zen 4 stuff.

Maybe I'll just send it, and flip my rear exhaust fan to intake and add some heat sinks to the existing VRM heatsinks

Well this sucked. Opened the unopened Amazon box to find this:

This was clearly used and I peaked at the chip to see a few bent pins as well.

I tried to replace it but replacing won't work since it's one per customer.

I decided to buy a 5900x on sale for now, hope it comes in brand new shape, so I can hold it and possibly return it for the 5950x.

After doing some research the 5900x in stock form outperforms the 5950x in a few key areas regarding Solidworks: https://www.pugetsystems.com/labs/a...5-AMD-Ryzen-5000-Series-CPU-Performance-2011/

Also going to do some research to compart it for gaming

5900x arrived without an opened seal, so that's good at least

    https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08164VTWH?ref=ppx_yo2_dt_b_product_details

Unless I overclock, it looks like the 5900x might be faster than the 5950x for gaming and some productivity tasks so I think I'll be happy with it. Not to mention that it'll be 50% faster than my current 2700x and that the cost difference can go towards a new PSU. What really gets me stoked, is that the 8 core 16 thread 2700x and my new 12 core 24 thread 5900x are almost the same regarding power draw. That's absolutely wild!

I'm also considering getting some slim fans so the top rad is a push pull setup, but only if the 12gb 3080 produces so much heat that the water loop increases in a dramatic fashion.

    Slim fans - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07P989QSM/?coliid=I39JGURDPOQSQ5&colid=1JJYF1CABU3OY&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it

Also, I need to flip my rear exhaust to be rear intake so I can cool my VRMS a bit better. Going to order this to help with dust control: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07LG1XLPN/?coliid=I3726YAEX8WFIO&colid=1JJYF1CABU3OY&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it

As soon as the water block comes (hoping by the end of March) I'll be able to finish this iteration of the build and simply enjoy it.

Well cancelled my order with ModMyMods.

My block was not in the past 2 shipments from Alphacool and they wouldn't have any available until later in the month if any, so I bought one that's arguably better:

This block from Bitspower is confirmed to work with the new 3080 12gb and actually covers more of the chips and hot components than any other block. At double the cost it better. Shipping from Taiwan so I hope it’s here by the end of the month!

I was hoping my Bitspower Block would arrive by the end of the month, but I woke up to a notification that the item has shipped!

I check the tracking number and it's supposed to arrive today!?

I ordered the block on the 3/7/2022 so it's a bit sus that it's already arriving. Maybe they had one in stock already?

I hope it's the right block, because I've has the worst luck getting a water block for this card :bananadead:

    What a PITA.

They attempted to deliver but my wife was likely in a meeting and couldn't come to the door so they didn't leave the package. SO annoying I've ALWAYS hated FedEx and this just perpetuates the hate.
