The Toyota uses an rear axel similar in strength (If not stronger) to a Dana 44 rear end. There are 2 kinds. One has an 8.4" ring gear, and the TRD Off Road modles have an 8" ring gear.

On the second gens, if you buy a Prerunner or 4x4 with a V6, you get an 3:73 gear. If you buy the 2.7 4 banger, you get a 4:10 ratio. :)

    thats it?? 2 gear ratios??

and isnt there a smaller ring gear for the axles for like the base 5lug trucks?

i couldve SWORN i read somewhere about a 7.5 or someshit

btw the older model tacomas have at least 7 gear ratios :)

**Edit** for reference purposes...according to other sites...the following gear ratios have been found in stock toyota axles
    3:15
    3:42
    3:58
    3:91
    4:10
    4:30
    4:56

Yeah. The 5 luggers have the 7.5" axel, but I cant remember the gear ratio. I think its 3:15 or something like that. My 2000 came with the 4:30's in it. :D Too bad they dont have the options like they used too. :(

Good stuff... dealer called me today saying they ordered my TRD exhaust.
I wonder what gearing I have in mine... I'm guessing 3.7**:1 First gear feels super low.

Gotta say, the audio freakin sucks. I'm gonna throw in some alpine component speakers and use my amp and sub from the old truck.

Really? You gotta replace UCA to fit a 285? Hey, do you guys get any coil bucket contact w/ spacer lifts? The frontier always banged on the coilbucket w/ 2" spacers. Stupid design...
