I ordered my new Nitto Terra Grappler P285/70R17's and went to have them mounted today and to my surprise they didn't fit. I put a 3" lift and spydertrax spacers in and they still rubbed. I was very surprised since another member had a set of Nitto Dune Grappler P285/70R17's on his truck with the exact mods I have with no rubbing at all. It was bad enough that it couldn't be driven. They had no issue taking the tires back and I'm back to the drawing board to find a good fitting tire.

Anyone know if the Terra Grappler runs a bit bigger than the Dune Grappler for any reason? I'm trying to figure out why one tire fits one truck and supposedly the same size tire from the same manufacturer doesn't fit the same truck. The technician thought it was the width that was the problem. I didn't get to see what it looked like on the truck, he had already dismounted the tire and had the stock one back on the rim. He said there was about an inch or so clearance going straight, but turning it hit the mud flap and the fender in front of the tire.

    Any ideas anyone?

im guessing it was the spacers giving you more turning radius. It will shove the tire against the wheel well. Trim it or get fenders. I had the same problem you had even with 265s and spacers. trim, hammer the pinch weld and do the cab mount chop.

alignment has a lot to do with rubbing but you're not gonna fit a tire like that without rubbing something. Either cut or get a 32. simple

course you will rub the mud flap... then trim some plastic it will be worth having the 285's

these were 295's and 3" liff

trim trim and then trim some more... backspacing on the wheel can change it, alignment, spring weight (i cant fit my tires with a 500lb spring, cant even get out of the driveway with out ripping off my fenders.. 700lb spring is enough for me) amount of tread on the tires etc, "sagging" of the suspension, amount of suspension compression during turn (faster turns make more body roll etc..)

I run 285-75-16 and I had to trim a lot off my fenders, grind / hammer down the pinch weld and get a cab mount chop.. its taken me 6+ months of trimming, then trimming a little more but i no longer have any rubbing :D

Thanks for the great responses. I'd really like to leave the plastic on the truck and find a tire that makes it look good, is bigger than stock which is why I lifted the truck, and that performs in snow and ice which is the nasty condition I face for about 7 months of a year here. That was my objective to start with.

It sounds like the wheel spacers may not have been a benefit by changing the wheel arc. Not that the tires would have worked anyway, but what did the spacers do for me with the 285's, would I have had rubbing on internal steering components? If I could have seen the truck with the tire mounted, it would have helped a lot. I don't need the width of the 285, I'd like the height of the 285/70R17 and want to keep the stock rims.

Any recommendations down this path? One size recommended is a 275/70R17 but it's hard to find, even in the brand he suggested. I'm not a tire expert, so I don't know a lot about what sizes are real and available. It's easy to plug numbers into a tire calculator to get an estimate of size, but it doesn't mean you can get the tire....:(

If you dont need the spacers I would try without them to see if it doesnt rub, if not then I would go with a 275 Im pretty sure they are available you just gotta look for it.

Do some trimming on the inner fenders and possibly the Cab mount. Some trucks can get away with not trimming the cab mount on 285's depending on wheel backspacing, tire tread design, alignment, etc.

I have 265 and rubbed like crazy, mostly due to spacers, just trimmed a ton of plastic and hammered back the pinch weld. All you need is a dremel, sledge hammer, and a rattle can and a little time. No cab mount chop hear, I do rub slightly when the wheel is completely cut on non flat ground but its nothing major.

I have the same issue but with 255/75's now that I have added Spidertrax spacers. I will be headed to sick nicks tomorrow to get cab mount chop done. They use to not rub without the spacers.
