I'm going to be pulling the trigger on some new tires soon. My main concern is longevity. Which tire is going to hold up the best in the rocks/trails as well as put up with me driving 70 down the interstate. They will be on my dd.

The tires I've narrowed my search down to are the Super Swamper IROK Non Directional and the Nitto Trail Grappler in a 315/75R16

    SS IROK ND: 34.7/12.50. 10 ply. 67lbs. 20/32 tread.

    Nitto Trail: 34.8/12.83. 10 ply. 75-80lbs? 20/32 tread.

So based on specs, disregarding price, what would you go with?

If you decide on the ND's post up a review. Im considering the 33's for my 82 pickup.

Love my nitto trails, they have got me through some rough trails where other tires failed. And they are 10 ply so they won't pop going over sharp rocks and such. Oh and the swampers will sound LOUD on the highway

Edit: I have about 30k on them and about 30%-20% is left.

I just bought a set of Nitto Trails, they are great looking tires and it really make me proud to have them on my truck. They don't have a loud hum just enough to let you know you have an aggresive tire running the road. I get a lot of compiments on this tire and I am happy with them.

Both tires look amazing. However, the swampers seem to have a little better specs than the nittos. Almost same height, smaller width. The main thing I'm worried about is the weight and how well the Nittos will balance. The siping on the iroks look good and should allow the tread to last especially if rotated regularly, which I do anyways. I love the look of the Nittos and their reputation but I think they're a bit too heavy. I keep seeing the nittos on full size which I think is what they're built for.

I'm also leaning towards the not so common look. I see the Trail graps everywhere. Umm still in between decisions.

I have looked at the mt/r's as well as duratracs. Duratracs are way cheap right now on tire rack.

The nitto's are heavy that's for sure. They kill both my mpg's and power on the highway.

the IROK tire line is THE answer to off people looking for a highway friendly off road version of thier typical swampers, they engineered that tire like a swiss watch.

You get a >lighter< incredible mud displacement, forward and in reverse, and when you are driving through a flash flood storm on the way home going 55+ mph on the hwy you don't have to worry about sliding due to loss of tire grip because of the way the treds push the water away from the rubber contact point of the road.

I have never used these tires on a Tacoma, I did however have them on my f150 in back in high school and lemme tell you. Just putting those tires alone on my truck got me into places I NEVER SHOULD HAVE BEEN in the first place :p

The nittos, ive looked at those every time I go to buy a new tire. But i take one look at them, and notice the amount of rubber on the tire (lbs) and then also look at the tread design and I just cannot see that displacing the amount of mud or dirt as other tires, not to mention, look at the tread if you notice the Iroc has a shit ton of steel in the tread to grab those rocks. I never used them on rocks but I can say without a doubt they would make a good run for their money up a rock trail.

I know your running this on the HWY so I worry about your tires providing you with control. My Iroks that I had didnt do very well when I started getting up to 80mph :D lol, i would imagine the Nittos would do better in this scenario.

Plenty of people here have Nittos, lemme know if you wanna know more about my mud days back in high school with a set of 33" Iroks :D

I'd like to think i have a fairly unbiased viewpoint on this, as i do not and have not owned either tire, but have wheeled on multiple ocasions with people running both tires. obviously the nittos will be quieter and ride smoother on road, but the swamper is by far a better off road tire, and from the people i have talked to, last long enough for them to justify buying them again when they do wear out.

You should be a tire salesman :D

The sheer fact that the Nittos are so heavy and on an already underpowered vehicle it would suck. Between the two I'm going to go with the Swampers. Now they aren't a for sure pick yet, but they're 1st on the list of the 3 I'm deciding on.

haha, anytime man, I come from a gun forum so im pretty used to reviewing and talking about things :p really i was just trying to address all of you questions.

    Hope I covered them all.
Yeah you have to think of it like this. Those nitto tires are going to force your drive-shaft to spin over 40 extra lbs. That's like strapping a damn bag of quikrete to it :p

You said you had 3 choices, what were the other 2?

I hated my terra grapplers they lasted me about 30,000 miles and one tire got a puncture in the side wall for some reason and two others had good size cracks in the side walls, there wasn't much tread left on them so I got trail grapples and had them for about 5,000 miles and I like them so far, the terra grapplers didn't do well in the sand at all my trails do much better

Thats because the terra grapples are a street/sand tire, im going to assume you were using it and driving it through something more rough than sand, snow or shallow mud. Terra grapples are really a company ("Nitto") seeing a need to fill a market of mall crawler trucks looking to put a "aggressive enough looking" tire on "phat" rims.

There is nothing wrong with just going for a look....hell i do the same thing when I get a new truck. We're just trying to figure out what is going to serve the OP best.
