    I think you're right. The shackle is there because eye to eye length has to change as the leaf compresses.

    One thought on "inverted shackles are stronger": that may not be a reference to the weight bearing capability of the suspension, that may be a reference to the shackle itself. Inverted the shackle is primarily under a tension load, and that will be stronger, and have a more graceful failure than one that's been 'flipped' and is now under a compression load. In almost all cases tension will be better than compression because there is no chance of buckling or bending.

    Jon- I'd like to try to retain my ability to carry my spare in the stock location. Can we cut-off the crossmember, weld on the 1 piece frame plates and then re-weld the crossmember?
