Not in an anaerobic compound. Two part epoxoes are a purely chemical reaction.

 

Things that air dry are aerobic

That is an aerobic reaction. Needs air to catalyze

 

And it is air that start the drying.... the anaerobic compounds are separate binding agents that once the liquids dry up and choke those of oxygen then anaerobic then start to cure like you said

 

But oxygen is the activator

 

I am unaware of hybrid aerobic/anaerobic stuff. Just know that threadlockers are anaerobic.

No the process is still chemical. But the reaction does not start until there is a lack of oxygen. Although I am sure the threadlockers will eventually dry out if left open to air. But it will not cure.

Where is Floyd? I know he has a chemistry background. my last chem class was in high school a looooong time ago

 

There is a normal adhesive drying process that start to happen and this then starts the anaerobic curing process

 

I popped a tube that fell on that garage floor and it got smashed. I'm still finding red goo on things so I think the lack of oxygen holds true

 

So what starts the normal adhesive drying process?

 

Ill ask one of the chemists next time I go the manufacturing plant.... our local one produces 1 part and 2 part epoxy products

 

I have 12 year old stuff from my Powerstroke that I had to use on the turbo that is still liquid. Nasty shit.

 

So in short you are saying that my statement about threadlockers is not wholly correct? That perhaps the heat from the friction of tightening up the lugs does start the reaction?

 

It is definitely an anaerobic process
