Water was crystal clear this weekend. Except for the watermelon rind that kept bumping into me.

That puts a damper on things... We went to a local beach in Staten Island a few days ago. As much as parks dept tries to maintain the beaches, water is just nasty here. So I wanted to take the kids to one if the beaches in NJ, hoping that open ocean's water will be cleaner/better

I'd say some spots are better than other beach wise. I doubt I'd ever swim off of Staten island

I lived in Staten Island so I can say this. I’d never go in the water off SI. Or Brooklyn.

I haven't been to an nj beach in a couple years but we used to go to long branch all the time and that was a pretty clean beach, usually relatively crowded though.

believe it or not NJ does not seem to have the nastiest beaches in the country....
    https://weather.com/health/news/americas-dirtiest-beaches-state-20140625

i would say in general the north east has cleaner water than you may expect. albeit beach areas near the major cities can seem extremely dirty and heavily polluted...

if you really want to see a dirty beach you should go check out Mumbai India or even better go check out Kamilo Beach in Hawaii

it is a shame that these garage patches collect more so in the middle of open ocean water though instead of all of it washing up on shore right up in the face of everyone wasting plastic

out of site of out mind :anonymous:

I’ve seen beaches all over.. Been to Costa Rica 3 times, lived in Puerto Rico for a month, Northern California, New York, Florida, and obviously Jersey. Jersey is a matter of where you go, some municipalities do a better job of maintaining the beach mix with people who respect the area (mostly up scale towns). I’ve lived in Long Beach Island and the beaches are nice and even the dune structure is amazing to protect against storms. But I’ve lived in Seaside Park, Seaside Heights, and Ortley Beach.. The dirty water isn’t the issue cuz it’s a giant filter cycling trash out to sea. The problem is the sand, it’s loaded with balloons, balloon strings, tampon applicators, plastics, grocery/Wawa bags, etc. Now the problem doesn’t completely start with people throwing trash on the beach but it does happen. I’ve seen people on IBSP drive away from a charcoal grill box the just opened and used, they took the grill and left the box. I’ve seen the trash cans on the beach in Seaside Heights all over flowing with trash and somebody walking up to it and leaving their trash on the sand at the base of the trash can. When the wind picks up that trash gets blown around and ends up in the waters.. Which is another way the beach stays filthy from storms washing up trash. All I’m saying is people look at the trash and think “not mine I’m not picking it up”. If people want to come enjoy the beach doesn’t matter locals or bennys you gotta respect it, pick up a price of trash. I hate seeing the summer crowds come into town shit on the beach and leave. Pisses me the fuck off. People will walk the beach for miles looking for and picking up seaglass but will step over and avoid a piece of trash like a straw. I sometimes spend my beach days picking up trash over sitting back and enjoying the day.

Here’s a pic from just an hour on the beach within a few miles..

its really disheartening, i spent about an hour each weekend last summer at my nearest local fishing spot collecting trash.
every time i came back, the area was just as bad as when i first last visited the week before....
sadly i called it quits after a neighbor was questioning me as to why i was there and how i didn't belong there...
I pointed at the posted sign and at the garbage i was hauling away, he told me he didn't care... i laughed in shock and awe, fuck that guy.

    North Jersey and New Yorkers..

They say visitors in the early days rode the train from the north to enjoy a cool trip to the beach. Their suitcases were stamped with the train stop names: (B)ayonne, (E)lizabeth, (N)ewark and (N)ew (Y)ork before hitting the Shore.
