@Blackout14 - what do I need to look for in a fishing kayak. I’m gonna start fishing the local waters for largemouth next year.

I like the jackson kayaks for their stability and reasonable price 1200-1800. Im still rocking a native watercraft manta ray 12’ though. Does well but not easy to stand up in until you get used to it and definitely shouldn’t fish standing up from it but I do.

 

I was just gonna say.. why would you stand up?

Largemouth, crappie and other freshwater. I'm more maneuverable when casting/retrieving frequently into structure along shoreline, at least that's how I fished in San Diego. I can overhead, under-head and side-cast better/more efficiently while standing.

Plus sitting for long periods of time sucks for me. Lot's of twisting in the waist/core area. At least with standing, I'm able to cast and retrieve using foot, core and shoulder to rotate.

 

I looked at the Jackson Kayaks. Damn those are nice. But spendy.

I'll start looking for a nice used, stable, sit on top, 12-14 footer similar to the Jackson Coosa HD (I think.)

 

It’s 100% you get what you pay for. I would look into used ones, get a good yak at a used price. New are crazy expensive and cheap is crap. I’m not a fan of Pelican, that was the first one I purchased and actually returned due to its cheapness and lack of accessories. I like the Wilderness fishing yaks and currently have a Mad River Canoe. The Mad River is a sit on top with built in fishing pole holders. Great for calm water in the back bays but I have pushed it to the limits launching off the beach. It does not have supper holes so I bail out the water I take on going through the breakers. Kayak fishing is definetly fun tho. Good luck out there.

 

I get that while on shore/stable ground but just as learning how to cast standing on water could be learned how to cast sitting down.. IMO. The thought of standing up, sitting down, standing up, sitting down to cover water doesn’t sound as pleasing as getting comfy in your seat and cast, paddle, cast, paddle, cast.

 

Yeah I should probably get the hang of casting/retrieving while sitting. More like an old habit that’s hard to break more than anything.

But I’d still like an SOT, to keep my options open.
