    Nope.

When I yell "truck boat" Ragnar knows the windows are coming up and it's time for a big splash.

    Haha

hey, what did you wind up doing with your steering rack? I'm curious about the Marlin Crawler MarRack that's in development right now.

Called Solo, Joined the very exclusive of club of people who have managed to break one, got a rebuild kit (free with membership), and put the new seal in.

The drivers side main seal on the piston is the weak point in the rack design, and it fails somewhere between bending the frame and the spindle, the latter being stronger. So now I carry a spare gasket, and can replace that in the camp-site if needed. I've also taken some big hits then without issue, so I think it was just an unlucky hit that popped the seal.

Who is solo? and what are his racks? I've been a little worried about steering rack and cvs being the most breakable things on my truck, since I'm working on armoring it up now.

I remember that being a rough drive back for you. How about CV spares, are you and the guy with the 4runner carrying them now?

Worried about pinstripes but thinking you are going to be busting cv’s and steering racks? I think you’ll be fine on stock components.

You know you can break a CV without causing panel damage right?

:notsure: First and only time I popped a CV was here after 5+ years of wheeling.

And you don’t end up here if you are afraid of panel damage.

Yeah, well I saw a 4runner pop one going through a mud pit. Sometimes you're just unlucky. For the price of a spare from napa I'd rather throw one in my truck and not need it. You don't really have to be so condescending about how you don't care about banging up your truck. A broken CV can happen to anyone, even if we'd prefer not to leave the trails with dents in our doors.

Solo Motorsports, the guys who make the Tundra rack conversion I'm running.

I always carry two spare half shafts, Dan is going to start doing so (after breaking two at RC). Before I upgraded the rack and tie rods I also carried spare tie rods.

At Takeover right? IIRC the one that popped it in a mud pit favored the gas pedal and didn't know how to drive. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes. Hey man I don't care about all the extra weight you add, and the money you spend. Don't get me wrong, CV's are a great spare part to have if you know you will be in a situation where you will need one. But a $900 steering upgrade probably is a bunch of wasted dough. Just trying to figure out what you are looking to do with your build, your spare parts list and upgrades say you wanna wheel but your opinions on pin stripes say you're happy sticking to fire roads.

It's all a cost benefit analysis. You're right, that steering rack is probably out of the box of useful for my needs vs price to buy. A refurb set of CV's from napa is like 130 bucks for both of them. Totally worth it to get home from a weekend trip. And yeah, I did pretty much all the same shit those guys did and didn't break or bang up my truck that day at all. I guess driver caution matters too. I like being over prepared, and if spending more to be more confident on greens and blues and still having fun is my idea of a good time, I guess that's just fine too. We'll see what my build and my confidence level looks like this summer I guess.

One thing I will say on the solo rack: unless you have killed an OE rack from wheeling I wouldn't upgrade it out of hand. Plenty of guys wheel the shit out of their trucks with no issue. However, speed kills steering racks faster than rock crawling, I killed my second rack in South Philly on sorta paved roads... Spend the money on gears and lockers, or on camping trips.
