    Welcome!

If you don't offroad, you probably won't ever need the 4x4. Just get Winter tires. It doesn't matter if you have FWD, RWD, 4WD, or AWD. It's all about your tires.

This but with some weight in the bed. Bed mat is pretty much a must have anyway so that and a couple sandbags.

Anyone know off hand what the price difference is between a 4wd and an identical truck that’s a prerunner? I use 4wd regularly offroad but if I didn’t I’d still consider 4wd. You need to put a value on driving around with sand in the bed and saying to yourself that “should” be okay vs turning a knob and not having to worry about it. If that number in your head is lower than the price difference just get the 4wd. While on remote trips we say it’s better to have and not need than need and not have, but that can apply to day to day life as well. That being said people made out just fine for decades with 2wd cars and trucks in the snow long before the whole SUV craze of moms with one or two kids needing a 7 passenger 4wd school bus that can’t park for shit was a thing

welcome! We have a saying around here... buy once cry once... buy the 4x4. And there are alot of people that “don’t offroad” that eventually get into it. Its like an addiction. You get sucked in and then you can’t get out.

according to the 3 toyota sites i checked the base model 4x4 sr v6 2020 is only 33k... i could not find a 4x2 listed. The trd offroad is 40k... if we could take an educated guess id say its probably 2-5k less MAYBE.

I've seen a lot of threads on here about people kicking themselves in the ass for not getting 4x4.

So for an extra $50 or so a month on a 60 month loan the 4wd option to me looks way better... plus resale value on a 4x4 tacoma is going to be better than a 4x2

4WD is nice to have for something as simple as driving on grass. Ever try backing up a slight incline on grass in 2WD?

The Dakota that came with the farm is 2WD. I’m up in NH visiting my folks right now. I’m buying a small enclosed trailer to start carting stuff to PA while I’m up here.

So here’s an anecdotal reason to want 4WD. The driveway here is a hill and it’s snow covered. Now, I put studded snow tires on the Dakota, and it’s a limited slip rear. The cap, tow hitch, and my tools in the bed, plus the empty 50 gallon transfer tank and pump provide weight. I can drive up the drive no problem.

Now, when I bring the trailer back here, there is no way the 2WD truck is going to push that trailer up the drive backwards. If I had the 4WD button, it would not be an issue.

It’s the little things that you don’t even think about until you are in the moment.

It is not only all about the tires. Although, obviously, tires are very important.

If tires are the most important thing, it only makes sense that having power to twice as much tire is going to be better.

You are also way more likely to have the ass kick out and spin you around in snow with a RWD vehicle without the front tires pulling you along as well.

Or, way more likely to spin around in a FWD vehicle if you only have snow tires on the front for that matter.
