The option to power all four wheels is better, yes. Necessary, no. The only reason I would suggest a 4x2 is because there was emphasis on not ever going off-road. If someone won’t ever go off-road, is it truly a benefit or an unnecessary expense. The initial financial expense and the continued expense of added weight, maintenance, potential mechanical failure from lack of use, etc.

I have 4x4 on my truck and I use it. But not on road. Even yesterday I went out driving and had trouble getting my truck to slide in the snow (4x2). The combo of the traction/stability control and my Winter tires is why. (Note: I did need to use 4x4 on road in the snow last year and was able to slide because of the all suckon tires.)

Another thing to note is that a FWD or RWD vehicle with Winter tires will out drive any 4x4 or AWD vehicle with all suckons. On road, of course.

Oh, and all four tires should be the same. On all drivetrain configurations.

I’m driving a 2WD Dakota right now, with studded snow tires, in NH in the snow. It’s doing fine, but it 100% does not out perform my Wife’s Subaru with all season tires.

    What are suckons?

And what magical winter tire are you running?

It's super scientific. I wouldn't expect you to understand.

I will say that RWD cars with winter tires will absolutely not, under any circumstance, outperform an AWD with All Season tires.

Haha! That's just what I call All Season tires. They're All Suckon tires because they are an all around compromise. Not great in any condition. Just okay or less.

Oh... I'm running General Arctics on my truck. They're not Blizzak WS(series) or Hakka's, but exponentially better than any AS.

It's all about traction. You can get up a snowy hill better with Winter tires than an AWD with AS tires, hands down. It's a scientific fact that Winter tires can attain more grip in snow than any AS tire. They have a softer and more malleable compound and so many more sipes. Plus the grip benefits of the ingredients or manufacture process of the rubber.

Driving in the snow is one of my most favorite things to do. When it snows and a bunch of us go out driving and the Subaru's with AS tires can't keep up with me when I'm driving a 330CI (RWD) with WS60s or an MKIV GTI (FWD) with Arctic Alpins. It really shows how much more grip the Winter tires can attain.

im going to go out on a limb here and say youve never driven a fwd car with winter tires or rwd with winter tires. A 4x4 with all terrain tires will out perform those cars any day of the week in the snow.

Going fast in snow i'd rather be in 2wd mode as well. Having the front wheels moving the same speed because of a transfer case or center diff causes a spin wayy too easily. As soon as the back slides and 'gets ahead' a bit, the front wheels can't 'catch up' if they can only go the same speed. Results in a spin unless you're thug nasty with steering and throttle control. And longer the wheel base the worse that effect gets, note most subies and audis got very short wheelbases and trac control overtakes in those situations. But then again going from a stop or trying to stop is wayy easier when the entire driveline can be made to work in unison. It's all trade offs and depends on conditions when you get into the details

@HolyHandGrenade See? I told you it was science.

I should at least state that by All Season tires, I'm referring to those with an M&S rating. Since we are generalizing by assuming all AWD, FWD, and RWD cars are equal among their respective drive types, I'll just disagree to disagree about the RWD.

I’m not sure if this forum has become pretty much intolerable.

Or, if I’ve become pretty much intolerant.

I’ve driven focus st fwd with blizzaks and aggressive tune and had 0 problems in 6 inches of fresh snow, can’t say it’s necessarily better or worse then a 4wd with all seasons but the stock tires that came on the 3rd gen offroad where 100% worse then my focus with blizzaks

just for the record an “all terrain” tire is much different than an “all season” tire. Continue about your discussion.
