At least it seems like there are people that wheel in your area. I have had a hell of a time finding anyone in western PA. It seems like most are from the philly area or at least central PA.

Social media has lead to pretty much every place around here being gated or posted. That and everyone getting sue happy about 15 years ago for getting hurt on someone's property. In high school I could wheel all weekend and never hit the same place once. Now, I have to drive at least an hour for a few hours of trails. 3 hours to get to a park and be able to wheel all day. busch league shit.

side by sides have really killed the trail systems around here though. We used to have a heavy dune buggy (old VW bugs) presence that kept a race track, hill climbs, and a myriad of trails open. Now everyone has a side by side, and the trails are kept open enough for them.

It goes for anything.. surf spots, fishing spots, trails... The moment a picture is posted complete strangers ask “where’s this”, “send me a pin”. So not only does social media not realize because we drive the same truck or into the same hobby there is no obligation to disclose information no matter how private the group is with people you’ve never met but that fact that locals don’t want the masses blowing up spots. I have a local beach to drive on that has changed for the worse over the years, Bekuz of social media imo. My fist buggy pass was in 2004 and on the beach you saw nothing but fishing trucks.. Now there’s a big presence of authority cuz it’s over flowing with SUVs and all wheel drives. Every year recently gets worse and worse. It use to be a getaway.. Now I go for sunrises and get out of there as the line to get in is a traffic jam. Pics are posted in various group of a truck on the beach and before someone didn’t even know about it now they are running out to get a pass. This why I end up living at the beach and vacationing in the mountains. I dream of getting away from the public to camp in peace and quiet.

I can see both sides to this. I am relatively new to the scene, and although I've always had a passion life held me back for years. Now I have the opportunity to get into wheeling in a more legit way then just sending my old stock toyota pickups. The issue is aside from OHV parks, I have no idea where to go. There aren't places like there were 15-20 years ago.

If it weren't for social media I would have absolutely no where to wheel in my area. There is a group that is localish that has been able to show me a few spots. They typically go to pay to play spots, but have opened my eyes to more local opportunities. With that being said, that group also has a good mentality when it comes to spots. Names may be given, but never coordinates. If you want to go, then meet at the designated meeting spot.

Asshats have really ruined much of the riding in this area unfortunately. People can't live by the tread lightly mantra, and leave trash everywhere, cut new trails through private property, the usual shit that landowners don't take to kindly to. There are still tons of trails for buggies, but not many that are open enough for a vehicle.

Do you think anyone would give you a hard time if you’re legitimately picking up trash along a trail as you go?

Think about it like this. (And assuming you're in a location not legal for it to begin with)..

Let's assume you were driving 125mph down the highway, stopping every so often to pick up some trash but still got caught speeding. Do you think the state trooper would let you go for being a good person?

Thats kind of a trick question. He'd probably give you two summonses. One for speeding and one for causing a dangerous condition by stopping on the side of the highway to pick up trash when you're not supposed to be doing in the first place!

I know you’re still gonna get something if you get caught but I was thinking you wouldn’t get it as hard. And comparing 125 on a public highway to <10 on an unpopulated dirt trail is a little over the top

The point is doing something you're not "legally allowed" to do. The specific act is irrelevant. Being a part time garbage man during the act doesn't absolve you in either example lol

The problem is in New Jersey there’s no such thing as public land. It is either owned by the state were 95% of it doesn’t allow motor vehicle traffic or its private property so you’d be trespassing to get the garbage. Other states have public lands or unmaintained/ minimally maintained roads that allow public access. These areas you are allowed to go on and if you stopped to pick up garbage any form of law enforcement would likely stop and thank you. Long story short NJ sucks for any type of motorized hobby

I'm just giving you a hard time. As always, your best chance of getting out of a ticket is always being respectful and cool w/ the officer...... But still pick up the trash to save us all from that global warming :rain:

It honestly sucks for everything. I remember after moving back from san diego and was at Island Beach State Park w/ my nephews. The lifeguards wouldn't let them use skim boards because too many people were apparently getting hurt on them. I asked if we could move further down the beach but it didn't matter. They wouldn't allow it. I couldn't believe the restrictions at the beaches here after having been away for so long. I remember growing up here and using them all the time at Manasquan. Even remember a guy w/ his head cut open from one. So the lifeguards probably have a valid argument, but still lol. Oh, and having to pay to get on the beaches is another pet peeve.
But it's the same with Union County still not allowing mountain bikes in the reservations. I remember when they banned that about 25 years ago and it's still a standing order. Unreal.
