    also in times of cold with no heat u all should have a fire place so no heat shuld be needed

    yeah, my wood stove is the heat source all year long. never turn on the electric baseboard

    water pump and water heater would have to be simultaneous. what kind of costs have you seen?

    Not a bad idea for the water pump, that's probably the biggest issue with no power.

    My house haz 3. :D

    Not necessarily, just run the water heater so it's up to temp and it will hold that for a good while, should be enough hot water in your tank (unless your tankless?) for at least a shower or two.

    I was only looking to see if it was worth me getting a generator for tailgating and getting a little better one that could do double duty as house backup. So getting a little $500 portable one vs. $1000 maybe but decided it wasn't going to really offer me much and I needed to spend much more like Scott is saying to do it right.

    Add another decimal point atleast. No need for all that though. A portable generator to power the fridge and a few other things is all you need.

    Just make sure you know how to use it. Lots of people die from portable generators.

    I was looking at super quiet ones, put it in front of truck and you can't hear it behind truck. They also cost a lot more for less power, thus why I decided it wasn't worth it.
