Yeah that was an amazing run! Where exactly were we? Im telling people North Rim but yeah... not even I truly know what that is... haha I've just been saying a mountain near Espanola

    :spy:

But yeah I did the whole thing with no issues... I only turned on the locker a couple of times just to have more traction.... easy peasy!

This is the section we drove on asphalt, heading back home:

    0001J0_zpsd33d3877_56c054b1c3e0ab5258515897a3181d694e8e6188.jpg

I'm attempting to figure out how to get Google maps to map the route we drove. For now, we drove a route from Espanola to Coyote that was south of the asphalt and north of the Caldera.

Here's the map view I love:

    caldera_zps94871fc2_ea7a2c1fa6fb7f4fc046fcc50cf2d13dbcfc8673.jpg

You can see the immensity of what that volcano once was. The caldera is what settled after it blew its top. We were puttering around for a few hours on the volcano's North slope. It was just THAT F'ing BIG.

Nice adventure guys. Looks like it was a good time.

I was reading some info on the caldera awhile back and they were saying that before it blew its lid, the elevation at the summit was around 20,000 feet. That would have put it in the running for the highest peak in North America. Denali/McKinley is only 20,2XX ft.

Can you imagine? A 20K foot peak in our backyard? That thing would have year round skiing, glaciers, and imagine how the snow runoff would change the flows on the Rio Grande. It would be a totally different environment here in the MRGV.

Yeah, it was huge. I've read that, when it blew its top off, some chunks ended up in what is now Kansas. Tent Rocks is a result of all the ash from the blowout. The Google maps view Tom posted is awesome, like a really big EarthZit.

Veterans Day!? Holy crap, a weekend that I actually have off work.

I'm off Sat/Sun Nov 9-10, and the morning of the 11th.

Are we talking a day trip here?

Sounds like Veteran's Day weekend is a good place to start.

Would be a day trip for me. I'm not set up for camping yet.

Farmington on Veteran's Day Weekend is starting to sound like a plan.

    Saturday or Sunday?

Figure heading out around 7am puts us ABQers in Farmington around 10am. Plenty of time to hit the trail before sundown?
