Notice the two hoodoos with huge rocks balanced on top at LR and LL of the photo...

MLK Day 2018 is next Monday 1/15. Does anyone have the day off and feel like doing some wheeling / exploring?

It doesn't necessarily have to be Monday, maybe this weekend or the following, but maybe we can get a group together. Anyone?

I need to replace my CV axles but I would be up for a meet somewhere just to try and meet more people.

Cool pics, Nick. All that ash is probably from when the Jemez volcano blew up, right? My understanding is that, when that occurred, it blew rocks as far as Kansas. Prolly pissed off the dinosaurs in the area greatly. :bananadead:

I'm hoping we can put together an actual trail run rather than a parking lot meet, but anything would be cool.

It's a neat area. I still have lots of exploring to do up there. There are several 4wd roads that take you up various arroyos and way up into the mountains toward Vallecitos / El Rito / Canjilon.

I think you're correct regarding the source of the deposits. It's the same stuff you see at Tent Rocks, which definitely came from the Jemez volcano.

Throw out any days that are good for you. I'm hoping to get a little spit-balling going here and maybe we can figure something out.

There's times when having an abnormal schedule definitely sucks. I'll see what I can do about getting a weekend day off.
    Normal days are Tuesday-Thursday :/

I know what you mean. I worked shift work for 7+ years with mostly odd days off. I can do just about any day of the week, and am happy to have even one other rig along for the ride.

Exactly! But at least I'm on a consistent Tuesday-Thursday off. Fixing my tie rods tomorrow but I'm pretty open to hit some trails in the coming weeks

I'm sort of game for Monday. Have a doctor's apt in the late morning which would limit the amount of daylight available for adventuring. Probably would be done about noon.

Hey guys, A little off topic but would anyone be interested in a first aid kit designed specfically for the off-road community? I was looking the other day and I could not find a kit that would suite the needs for what it's inteded use would be. something a little more advanced then a boo-boo kit that held some vital gear that could save lives and or be the difference of someone walking again or not. I would like any feedback on this as I would like to offer it to the TW community.

    Totally on topic.

I use the Adventure Medical Kits. They go all the way from booboo to full blown trauma in the wild. https://www.adventuremedicalkits.com/

If anyone knows of any wilderness first aid courses, please let me know. Would love to get some non-life threatening hands-on experience.

We could do a quick run down to San Lorenzo canyon... 1 hr drive each way. Some fast sections up the wash, then some mild wheeling & slot canyons, then a short hike if we feel like it, then back out.

Like Tom, I use the Adventure Medical kits with a few add ins. I also think my weak spot is having the right knowledge to use the tools on hand.

REI has a 2 day course that I've been meaning to take. They teach it in partnership with National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS). The class is $235, and they have an indoor class every month or so and a couple of outdoor classes. The only thing I could find on their website is the next outdoor class, in June:

    https://www.rei.com/event/wilderness-first-aid-with-rei-nols/cedar-crest/179721

I paid the $20 for a membership years ago and the last membership email shows they have a class on 1/20-21, but it is full:

    https://www.rei.com/event/wildernes...ntsJanuary&RRID=17542785&ev11=1&mi_u=17542785

They also have one that is free, first come first served.. First Aid Essentials... which covers the ins and outs of what should be in your kit.

Let's do it! Checking if S is up for it.

Let's do it! S is up for it. I've checked their calendar a couple times but didn't look very far out. I'm all over it.

Alright, so here's a firm proposal... who's in?

Monday January 15, 2018 - 3rd "Annual" MLK Day Trail Run - "I have a dream... of the outdoors!"

We haven't put one of these together since 2015 guys, lets get our shit together.

    Location: San Lorenzo Canyon, NM
    Date: Monday January 15, 2018
Time: approx. 12:30p meet up near I-25, depart back to ABQ around sunset
Rig requirements: Stock friendly, some optional obstacles, mostly mild exploring, geology, scenery, slot canyon, easy hiking. Pet friendly, off leash okay.

Directions: From the Big I, head south on I-25 65 miles to exit 163 San Acacia. Turn left onto Alamillo Rd and go 0.1 miles to I-25 frontage road, turn R (south). Go south 2.3 miles to highway underpass. Turn right and cross under I-25 going west. Follow dirt road 2.2 miles to right hand turn marked with BLM signage, this is the entrance to the wash leading to the canyon. Drive approx 2.6 miles WNW up the wash to the entrance of the canyon, marked by a large slot canyon to the right. Explore!

Approximate drive time from the Big I to the entrance of the canyon is 1hr. 20 mins.

This will be a quick and dirty run just to get out of town. See pics below from a past trip. If you're in, add your name to the list and copy and paste into a reply.

    Who's going:
    1. Bigfishallday
    2. Tomtom
    3.
    4.
    5. you!

Easy! The only part even remotely risky for a 2wd would be going up the wash. There is lots of sand, so if you stopped in the wrong spot it might be tough to get going again, but most of it is gritty enough that its not a problem. If it becomes a problem, I have plenty of straps to help get you moving again. Anything that requires 4wd is completely optional.
