I like manual lever actuated transfer case myself, why the manual hubs? I'm always in something nasty when IhI to get out of my CJ and lock the hubs.

Wow! So the 4WD transfer case shift motor cannot just be replaced by removing a few bolts and unplugging a wire harness on the Tacoma?

Without the manual hubs there is still an electric actuator (Automatic Disconnecting Differential) that is also known to fail without use. This locks the front axles...but it's not a diff lock. The FJ Cruiser and full-time 4WD 4Runner don't have this.

You always lock the hubs and leave them locked when weather is bad or you go off road. Then, a mere pull on the lever gives you 4wd.

This is what I always did when I had a truck with a manual shift transfer case and lock outs.

This is the main reason I hate electronic 4wd systems . Why can't the auto mfgs go back to tried and true mechanical lever operated set up with locking hubs

I agree that exercising the 4x4 system is important. I never had an issue with my 06 Tacoma when I didn't use the 4x4 for months. Same with my Ram and my current Frontier 4x4. I would say I exercise the 4x4 about every 3 months. Never had an issue of the system engaging.

Agreed and it has been this way for a while. These actuators are prone to failure even if used and they could have designed it to be replaced without splitting the case.

So...just got off the phone with my Son. Dealership confirmed it is the front diff actuator...#41400-35034. He had already ordered the new part, but will take off the old one tomorrow to see if it just needs resoldering the terminals to fix. I even texted him the torques...with SM file being sent tonight.

    Big Thanks!

I miss the manual hubs and transfer shift. My 1994 toyota PU is the reason I still buy Toyota trucks.

If nothing an else, the option would be nice. I assume there's some sort of cost or 'ease of use' reason behind it. It certainly isn't gas mileage or reliability. Or maybe they think having the computer in control results in fewer complaints.

I used to have a 94 chevy, and it had similar issues. At least the they got rid of the thermal front axle actuators...of course when the DPO upgraded mine he did a shit job of it and it would eventually blow the 4x4 fuse every time you shifted. So thats cool.

When I had manual hubs I locked them when leaving the paved road. Never had to get out in unpleasant conditions.
I long for a legacy 4x4, 3 shift lever, 4 if you have the PTO winch.

Grab an FJ or 4Runner manual shift case, twin stick kit, the full time FJ front axle parts, and you have your wish.
