No air from center vents, always from side.

Howdy! I bought my truck in Feb and have been going through it, replacing parts, etc. You all have been an invaluable resource for knowledge. Thank you!
But I thought instead of lurking in the bushes watching, I'd finally pop out and join the conversation.

    So, I have a problem.
    I have a 96, extended cab, 2wd, 2.4l, auto, 360k miles.
When I turn the fan on and the mode lever is set to dash, air comes out the side vents, but not the center vents.
When it is set to dash and floor, it comes out the floor, and the side vents.
When it is set to defrost and floor, it comes out the defroster, floor, and the side vents.
When it is set to defrost, it comes out of the defroster.....and the side vents!
The mode lever is cable operated. I can see the end of the cable, it is moving smoothly and not binding. I can see the linkage the end of the cable connects to, It works smoothly as well.
I can hear the "thup thup thup" as I move the lever through the different modes.
I've looked, but I can't find a picture of what it looks like inside that box, how many doors there are, etc. Any guidance would be appreciated.

Sometimes the clips that hold the cables in place are weak and slip, you may need to watch them operate with the switches out.

I usually bend them and clamp them on the cables HARD.

The cables can also be the problem, binding over time.

Then again you may have some rodent nests in the duct work.

The duct work may have fell apart or it was pulled apart and never reinstalled by the last owner.

In the winter mine lives in defrost
