Go to an RV or trailer place or Amazon and get a direct plug in pig tail that requires no splicing. You can get a Tekonsha wire and brake controller for like $100, plug it in and you're done!

Alot of buyers hate the covers so scan CL for someone who will be selling one for cheap.

Why get ripped off by the dealer because they say so? A little research goes a long way.

The 2 V6 trucks I've seen didn't have the pigtail in the glove box. they did have the plug to block off the harness when the tailgate is removed. The connector is different from the last generation.

Just went and checked 3 trucks we have and none of them come with the connector, just the block-off plugs for the tailgate.

If you need a brake controller you need a different truck.

Or you're towing a not-very heavy trailer that has brakes.

In that case you don't need them.

You do realize that in most states a trailer above 3k GVW requires brakes. So a Scamp or Casita travel trailer that weigh in about 2-3k has them. And if a trailer has brakes and you're not using them, you're an idiot.

I thought you were talking about a bigger trailer. 4,500 pound is the limit here

I might have misread the OP. Did you mean the 2016 doesn't have the plug under the dash/kick panel (owner's manual shows that it does), or that it doesn't come with the pigtail in the glovebox to solder onto the brake controller harness? (undetermined, but I'm leaning towards no)
    Like so (from a tundra):

I know what he meant. He is implying that if you're thinking about a brake controller then your load is too heavy for a mid size truck, in this case a 2016 Tacoma. And I'm informing him that smallish trailers (like my 2014 Casita) which weighs in at about 3k is right in the wheel house of a Tacomas towing capability. All 16 and 17 foot Casitas have trailer brakes for example. If you're towing one of these with a Tacoma then a reasonable person would need a brake controller to brake safely. No bigger truck needed. And again, you'd be an idiot not to have the controller if a trailer with brakes is behind you.

With the V6 towing package, the limit is increased to 6800lbs.

What is a good brake controller on the cheap and what do I need to wire it up? Truck is coming in a few weeks and I want to be ready.

You will need the pigtail from the brake controller to the vehicle connector under the kick panel. I use a tekonsha p3. Lots of adjust-ability. Have a pigtail for my fathers 15 and will have one for the 16 Im going to get. Easy swap between whatever truck is pulling my trailer.

Are people confusing the tailgate camera wire harness with the brake controller pigtail?
