I'm sure if it was the Park Neutral Safety Switch it wouldn't click at all.

    Soon...
Well, took it to the shop and it was the starter.

I like turning my own wrenches and can figure my way through most stuff with the help of youtube and panicked forum posts but with my current setup that's not really an option. Hoping to move to a place with a driveway once my lease is up.

If you get 12 volts at the starter or across the terminals for that matter you battery is dead and your truck won't turn over. You want something around 12.6 volts.

Damn that's young for a starter to go. From what I've read here they seem to go at 200000+.

The one in my 4 banger started crapping out at 175,000 miles

Seen several model As and vintage vehicles start in that fashion. We used to take a rubber mallet on tours for this purpose.

4 banger, but the Denso (most of them) are exactly like the video. I'm sure the 6 cylinder starter solenoid is the same.

It isn't the starter exactly it is the contacts in the solenoid that are burned due to arcing.

Not really a factor of mileage, but starter cycles. Easy to replace for 35 bucks and an hour of your time.

I'd much rather spend 35 bucks rather than hundreds for a new starter. To each his own.

-40!!! Definitely keep a half tank or more, like @drewbert41 mentioned before.

Consider leaving 15-20 minutes early a few times a week to get your truck up to operating temps. Take a longer route home when home can. You might already be developing sludge. Read up on how to clean it out. You could also do some short mileage oil changes when the weather turns warmer after some long trips.

That's what I plan on doing when it's time. Already have the parts to rebuild. Sounds like it's a pain to get out of a V6 4x4 though.

I was referring to a general battery voltage that should be available in a couple places at the starter

Thanks for clearing up the confusion that resulted from my careless post

The 4x4 V6 has a lot more interference than a 4 cylinder Prerunner like I have. I had the starter on the ground in less than 15 minutes and back into the truck in 45 more minutes. Total about 1 hour.

I think the V6 4X4 has to come out between the body and the frame through the wheel well... A little tight, but doable.
