I finally got around to a bunch of needed maintenance, and when I got everything back together the engine would not start (2004 5vz-FE in a Tacoma). I can get it to start with starter fluid, so I assume it is a fuel problem. And once it is running everything seems normal. I can shut it off, and restart if the engine is still warm. But if it cools off it is a struggle to get it running again.

There is also a new buzzing noise coming from the throttle body, so I fear I messed it up while cleaning it.

There is also a P0118 code (engine coolant temperature sensor 1 circuit high). I am not sure if it is related or not, but would a bad temp sensor cause a problem on start up? The sensor on the valley between the heads is plugged in, so it wasn't just leaving that one unplugged.

Did I break my TB? I manually opened the butterfly valve trying to get it clean.

Any idea what I messed up, or what would tell the computer to not deliver fuel when starting a cold engine?

    Recent work done:
    Valve cover gaskets
Valve clearance (only one was out of spec at 215k miles, adjusted that one, and was in spec when I put the valve covers back on)
Timing belt along with timing pullies, water pump, tensioner (runs just fine so I don't think I caused anything there?)
Cleaned the TB and Mass Air Flow sensor, new PCV valve
    Replaced all the coolant hoses

Here is a video with a start attempt and the TB noise:

Now it also has a P0113 code (Intake Air Temperature Sensor 1 Circuit High)

The Coolant Temp Sensor can absolutely cause a starting issue as it plays a big factor into base fuel calculation.
The Intake Air Temperature Sensor (built into the Mass Air Flow Sensor) has a small effect on fuel calculation among other things while it probably wouldn't cause a starting issue it should be addressed.

Is this the sensor you left unplugged?

That may very well be it. It looked like it was back in, but on checking again the electrical connector was not fully seated. I had mistaken what I think is the knock sensor 2 for the engine coolant temperature sensor and was looking at the wrong connector.

The engine is warm now, so I will have to wait for it to cool off to see if that was it. Thanks a ton for pointing me in the right direction.

Electronic throttle bodies on the 04 always make buzzing noises. It's normal.

That was it, just had to reconnect the coolant temp sensor. Thanks for the second set of eyes on the problem.

Hopefully the intake air temp code was just a result of the starter fluid and will stay off with the codes deleted.

Also good to know the TB buzz is normal. I guess I just haven't had my head under the hood with the ignition on and the engine off in all the years I have had the truck.
