No Fuel Pump Relay? Really? 2017 Taco, 5000 actual miles

2017 Taco with 5,000 miles on it...(yes you read correctly...that is another story)

A local oil company received a Diesel contaminated load of non ethanol. I topped off my tank with 13 gallons of the stuff, drove it non stop for 300 miles, did notice hesitation and no pickup. The next morning at startup I knew I had problems. Smoking, coughing & dying
Short story, the oil company is taking responsibility. They are paying for all repairs.

I would rather get a root canal than go to a dealer for anything, paid for or not. That being said,
I have seen on this site that 2017 Tacos do not have a fuel pump relay. How then would I pump out ALL the crud still in my tank? If there is a fuse/relay, where SPECIFICALLY is it located in the fuse box?
If there is a relay to the pump, or another way to activate it, (HOW?) what are the actual steps to get all the lines cleaned out at the same time as the tank? Do I disconnect one or both lines in the engine compartment? Actual procedures please.

There is no official fuel pump relay. There is a fuel pump control ECU mounted to the frame on the left side ahead of the tank. Under the doors. That fuel pump control ECU has a connector on it that is power, ground, and fuel pump control. Power comes from the "EFI main no. 2" relay which is in the box under the hood. That relay is triggered by "EFI main no. 1" relay which is also under the hood. Ground is just ground. Fuel pump control "FPC" comes from the ECM. I'm not sure what exactly the ECM sends to operate the ECU. Not sure if it's a ground control, 12V, etc.

In the high pressure fuel pump section of the FSM, there is a portion that tells you to turn the pump on using techstream. Not sure if that works on the in-tank pump or only the high pressure direct injection pump.

 

I'd drop the tank...clean it out...they paying you for this?

 

Better yet, I'd have a mechanic drop the tank and clean it out. They're footing the bill. And if the repair either gets ratfucked or if a non repaired part gets missed, you really want someone else holding that bag.

If you try to diy it and pocket the difference, guess what happens in the event that something goes sideways? They'll tell you to pound sand.

 

Actually, I'm surprised that the company lawyers are letting you even touch it. Because if you lay hands on the check they cut, that's it. And if you try to wrench on your own truck, that also clears them of responsibility. Their part is done and you can't go back if the cost exceeded their payout.

But if it goes to an independent shop, the money never touches your hands, nor does the liability. The oil co pays the mechanic, and now it's on the mechanic to restore your truck. Most importantly, it's all documented by a third party, which will protect you legally in case something else pops up a month from now.

When someone else damages you, you don't do the repairs yourself. It'll wind up screwing you.

 

Fuel tank will have to be dropped.

you do not want to use your fuel pump for this. Keep that trash out of the fuel pump. And secondly, if you were to do this, once you get down towards the bottom of the tank, the fuel pump will receive additional wear, and may overheat due to the lack of fuel.

Was contaminated fuel always remove the fuel tank and clean the fuel tank out don’t use a pump

Double bingo. I didn't want to rain on your parade in your other thread OP, but yeah. I'd have a good independent shop do this if the oil Co is footing the full bill.

 

Sounds like the OP pumped diesel instead of gas..

Bring it to the dealer and let them do it. You might also have engine damage.
