Hello, just bought a used 2011 Base 4x4 Tacoma truck from a dealer about 3 months ago. Recently when I go from Park to Drive the D doesn’t light up on dashboard unless I move selector to 2nd gear then back to Drive. P is lite before I start the process. Also the shifter seems tighter to move when this happens. I was wondering if someone knows what causes light to turn on in dashboard: would it be in the shifter console or at the neutral safety switch located on tranny, or something else? Truck drives fine even when D doesn’t light up. Any help would be appreciated.

The issue is more likely the neutral safety switch or the shift lock ECU.

I had similar issue a few weeks ago, however it brought up codes and went back to normal on its own. Codes cleared after code reader was removed. I got a lot of good information from several of the guys here and it was similar to what you were told. I crawled underneath to check it and take some pictures. It is in a little tight space under there so I will bring it in to dealership for this when oil change is due. If I touch it I will probably mess up something else, lol. Also be careful mine rolled backward and clicked when I thought it was in park, I did not yet engage e brake.

A lot of good information is on this site.
It’s just hard to find it, that’s where being around here for a while helps.
If you can remember seeing it, you can then jump over to Google and use their site search.
Then just search TW site only for certain keywords. I still can’t seem to get good results with the search bar here on TW.
