Just take it back to the dealer and ask that they switch the toyo to the spare wheel for your troubles, then chalk it up as a valuable lesson learned.

I'm the type of fool that takes my truck to the dealer for everything while its under the 36,000 mile warranty -- everything but tires and battery that is. Always go 3rd party for tires.

PS, I've had amazing service from Discount over the years, some places will even let you buy replacement protection on tires you got from the dealer, as long as they are still new.

I would not go in and demand it as that is pretty strong . but doing the swap is a good solution unless it is just a matter of time until a new Michelin comes in, if that is what the dealer is doing or waiting for . I would also want the new tire on the rear passenger side (drive wheel ) as it will eventually wear down faster to even out with the other 3 tires .
This actually is what happened to me . When getting my last free oil change and tire rotation , the dealer said they found a nail in one of my Goodyears . The offered to plug it and swap it out with the spare for me . All for $25 total . I was impressed .
Edit , I learned a long time ago that getting mad and loud at service people , usually makes them want to get even behind your back .

OK I drive to the dealer they say oh you have a nail in your tire. OK has it been in there how long? Yesterday or 8,000 miles ago? Any good tire outfit could have dismounted the tire put a patch inside and said have a nice day we'll see in 30K for a new set of tires. Don't even go there this is an everyday occurrence an inside patch will fix most sidewall nail punctures. $20 vers. $274 no brainer.

Yeah I edited that as you were replying. You're correct, a polite conversation always gets better results than attitude.

To borrow from a wise man:

“Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity” @Boghog1

That said, I do not let dealerships replace my tires. I find a tire shop, and am aggressive on pricing with them. OP, you may not have been in a position to allow that. However, swapping out the spare until getting to a tire shop is always an option.

Most side walls can’t be easily patched and most places will not patch a side wall.

That’s true here in California. I wouldn’t do it if it was legal.

I would not trust a sidewall patch on any DD.

Places I would accept a sidewall repair: Lawn tractor, wheel barrow, hand truck, generator tire, possibly a bicycle tire. NEVER on a vehicle doing highway speeds.

Well I agree with the OP, I have followed many builds here at TWC & I haven't seen any with mismatched tires, My Tacoma is not a "build" just a nice truck, I wouldn't for a minute drive with mismatched tires, I KNOW it wouldn't hurt anything, (Kind of like wearing mismatched socks) 3 weeks is a long time to wait for a tire!! I have no problem purchasing tires/battery at the dealers, I have found them to be competitive, as for service well, each dealer is different. My dealer in MN is top notch!! CA--not so much. Patching the tire is not even an option!! jmop

    1. You signed the estimate and signed again when you picked your truck up, yes?
    2. It took you ~2 weeks to notice.

Pretty sure you gotta chalk this one up to life lessons and soldier on.

I'm going to need to get a law degree before I can ever buy a new Tacoma. Too many lawsuits to farm them all out.

Wait what’s more surprising is you only had one tire replaced? Wouldn’t you replace two to ensure even wear on both side?

At 274 each, I sure as hell wouldn't. It really all depends on how many miles on the other tires and how they were worn.

OP, you already faulted your own skills of observation, but I really wanted to drive that point home. In the aviation industry, most maintenance actions have to be signed off by two entities:

    1) The wrench-turner, or "corrector"
    2) The quality assurance rep, or "inspector"

Humans make mistakes, which is why it's important to have more than one set of eyes on an installed part. Treat the entire maintenance department of the dealership is the "corrector". They may or may not have a master tech personally inspect the work done by the guy fresh from tech school. Even if you had an engine swap done, YOU need to scrutinize the work when it is completed. No one cares about the final product or the safety of your rig more than #1. Take it upon yourself to be the second set of eyes!

That being said, I also recommend taking your truck to Discount Tire (or equivalent) for your future tire needs, though be cautioned that no shop is perfect. My local Discount (a shop I trust) mounted KO2s for me a couple months ago - my rig looked great with 265/70R17s all around, but something was off. The front tires and spare were actually 285/75r17!

As long as they’re not drastically different sizes / weights, it’s not a huge deal. Also not as problematic as if would be on an AWD car.

OP should be up in a few hours. I wanna see a pic of that invoice from Servco for his Toyo AT2

Not when they're new. If there's less than 5000 miles on them buying just one tire won't show any difference. I'd be willing to go as far if I had less than 10,000 miles on the other three.

I was in the same situation a few years ago. I bought my 2016 one month before I got relocated due to job offer. (Short move, 250-ish miles away.)
On moving day, between cities I had a flat. Truck alerted me at whatever the default is, 28 psi or so. The back seat was so full of crap I couldn't access the jack without a freeway yard sale. Google found me a tire shop within 5 minutes, and i rolled into the parking lot on 8 psi. Tire was toast.

Being a small town D.T. they didn't have a giant selection in stock, and being in transit I couldn't wait for a matched tire. So I bought a Pirelli, thinking that I might replace the other three with the same one day, and had them mount it to the spare.

I still kick myself over that, because I wound up buying a set of Falkens less than six months later. So as long as I had that truck, I rocked a set of all-terrains while carrying an expensive-ass street tire as my spare.
