Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
Have to agree with this one. After owning a 4 cylinder before, it's only place was in regular cab models that weren't so heavy. Preferably in the 2WD 5 lug form, not enough poop or notably better MPG to not justify buying a V6 with all the power when you need it and much better resale value.

I understand Toyota trucks were made famous on 4 cylinder engines like the 22R and 22RE, but that was back when the trucks only weighed around 3,000 pounds and weren't nearly as large. Today they weigh in excess of 5,000 pounds and that's just pushing it for a 4 cylinder engine in my opinion. Not saying the 4 cylinder is a bad engine, I just don't get why people would want one after spending any considerable time in a V6. I would never go back to a 4 cylinder Tacoma, V6 for life here and especially if I ever upgrade to a 3rd gen since the V6 gets better mpg than the 4 cylinder anyway.

Yeah, the 4 bangers in the 5 lug 2WD old man truck are fine, some guys can squeak out more than 25 out of those...if I didn't need 4WD I would own one, since I am turning into a penny pinching grumpy old fart...

Not sure what they are thinking by ditching the 5 lug.

For the 2.5 gen the 4 cyl is pointless. In the 2nd gen and 1st gen there was some decent MPG upside there, even in the DC forms.

Maybe Toyota didn't redo the 4 cyl because they're planning a turbo version with like 200-225 hp in the near future? That would be nice. Don't need to try for like 250 hp to take 3.5L sales away. The current 2.7L 159hp has run it's course. Its done.

    Don't agree with you there.

No, I am not towing. If i wanted to tow, it would be Tundra i'd be after.

Mine has, and will do 120-130 km/h all day long, loaded to the gills with an ATV and crammed to the corners with assorted other weighty gear. For what is designed as the base, lowest cost Tacoma, that's plenty work enough for the average person buying this stripper-trim Tacoma with the 4 cylinder.

If i lived in the hills of Kentucky, then a V6 would have been in the offing. I don't .. I live in a region of relatively flat terrain. The i4 doesn't struggle in that environment - it does perfectly fine.

Rather than a broad-sweeping opinion that it's useless to everyone else, just go with what works for you specifically, and leave it at that.

It's cheaper to order and manufacturer one component type and utilize across all models, than it is to operate two distinctly different parts channels involving lesser quantities for each. Economy of scale. It is indeed a manufacturing savings to be realized.

That part of this controversy makes perfect sense.

Up is down, 2 + 2 = hammer. See, I can make up idiotic claims without evidence too. The only opinions that matter are the signatures at the bottom of bills of sale. Tacoma - with less hp, less torque, less gears, no bells, no whistles, decade old interior, worse gas mileage - somehow managed to sell more trucks than the rest of the market combined. Why don't you start by explaining how this happened without involving reliability and capability. You can't.

I'm not attempting anything. It is an objective fact that the 11 year old Tacoma, that has none of the bells and whistles you claim motivate the majority of truck purchases, sold more units than the rest of the market combined. There is no argument, nothing to defend. You are wrong. Period. I'm slapping your taint with my balls.
