Fake, we all know, that all Tacoma owners just buy them for Sho and Tell.

Most of the rest of the world gets by with the Hilux - a basic, no frills, 4-banger that carries along everything from a .50cal to livestock for market. Not a heated seat, 13 cup holders, low-crawl mode, V6, or complaint about a non-matching interior in sight.

I guess i'm an old man... still a child between the ears, but still an old man approaching my 50's fast. I started with an early 1980's Nissan 720D until it rotted away. I carried on with a late 1980's Toyota, until it too rotted away. Both were very basic, but 4 cylinder did me perfectly fine.

The Tacoma may have gained weight compared to those - but the size and horsepower of the 4 cylinder improved also to compensate. For myself, on the 2010 .. it does fine. For certain market segments like the fleet/"old man" version, it'll do perfectly fine for the new 2016.

A small compact truck with a 4 cyl and 2wd from 95.5-2004 was a very good combination, a larger 05-15 truck with a slightly and barely more powerful 4cyl.. was fine for limited functions but still the V6 did everything better. except the trucks that had no V6 as an option then... we cant even compare those. (5 lug 2 wheel drive single cab- all single cabs with 4x4 or pre-runner) however look at the x-runner.. when side by side with a 4cyl version the only advantage the 4cyl had was a few more mpg.. where it failed was power, towing, super charger add on from factory under warranty and fun factor.

The new 2016+ huge heavy near full size truck size with that same 4 cyl engine is just pointless. especially when compared the the V6 that gets nearly identical MPG and costs $800 or so more with almost 2x the power... There is no reason to buy one unless you honestly dont care or cant find the trim you want so you settle.

This is the third gen 2016+ section so saying how cool your 95-04 or 05-15 is or was.. means nothing.

Even though this is in the 3rd Generation section - the 3rd Generation remains to be officially released, or experienced by anyone in either 4-cylinder or V6 forms.. as such, it is nothing more than an opinion thread - by all parties, whether interested in purchasing the 3rd Generation or not.

As such, all opinions, "means nothing".

Does anyone have any experience with what a better air filter, better exhaust, and maybe some reprogramming can do to mpg's? I know we're all disappointed with the figures that were just put out, so what are some ways we can increase them ourselves?

The vehicle isn't out yet. No one has any experience with the new motor in the Tacoma platform.

Well no kidding man, come one. I'm asking about experience with the current truck 05-15. Just wondering if that stuff has made a difference in the past. If so, then it would be reasonable to think it may make a difference on the '16 model

What I would suggest is if you buy 2016 not to touch any sh.t on engine for atleast 2 years after the purchase. Those 2gr's are not like 1gr.

They made 3 articles about 2 trucks from one guy's opinion of driving one truck. I'd expect nothing less of Jalopnik.
