That's a valid point. I think many times parents get too used to their young kids accepting everything they say as the gospel truth. They forget that as kids become teenagers, they start thinking for themselves. At a certain age, it's not enough to say "do this, or "don't do that". It's important to say why you're setting the rules you're setting.

All of the guys posting about what the pieces of junk they had to drive around in high school because that's all our parents could afford at the time are actually secretly jealous of you because we would have all loved to have a truck like that when we were young.

In regards to your current situation, worst thing you can do is nag your dad to death about the issue. Best thing you can do is explain it to him once about how much modding the truck will mean to you. Then tell him you will never mention it again if he disagrees. If he disagrees then honor your word and take care of the truck as best you can. Your dad won't forget it and it will be in the back of his mind that it's what you want to do, if he cares about you he will allow you to do it eventually because you showed him respect by not being a whiner about it. It may take a while but I see that's the only real chance you have.

I have 2 children and 7 grandchildren and a (good Lord!) greatgrandchild by way of a stepchild, and I can say without fear of contradiction that parents often get exasperated with their young.

It's a difficult job beiong a parent, it's much harder than you ever imagined it would be when you were young, it gets more difficult as the kids get older, there's no clear guidelines for doing most of it, and your kids will have no true appreciation for anything you had to do untill they have kids of their own (and often not even then.)

If the young folks here think their parents are often being short-tempered, arbitrary, obtuse, and inflexible, it's usually a sign that they're simply very close emotionally and psychologicaly to the straw that broke the camel's back.

Some kids are good at keeping their parents at that point too.

If you ever get to the point where you know your parent has done something to you to tick you off on purpose, they may well be just one more straw away.

Take pity on them, huh? Most kids don't have a clue what their parents go through.

I see what your saying. I think too that is the best way to handle this situation. Im going to try and talk to my dad tonight about this. Hopefully like you said will convince him that its ok to mod my truck.

WTF is this for? This is really uncalled for and if we should start comparing how shitty this or that was "back in my day" bull shit here goes: At age 12 I was diagnosed with leukemia and beat it then I relapsed at 14 and beat cancer again. My first car was a 91 camry (same age as me) and I totaled that during a bad snow storm (was my first winter driving in the snow) then my dad said he would buy me a truck which I got a 1987 toyota pickup and a few months after we bought it the engine crapped on us and a few months later my dad but me a 2003 toyota tacoma so I could have a nice reliable car to drive. I am very grateful of my dad for buying me my truck and I do not feel I'm spoiled just been giving a great truck by my dad. Get and beat cancer twice before you start talking to me. This is not just aimed at the 09TacoLI but others that posted saying that all in this generation is spoiled and what not many of this generation probably are but not all are and sorry you had a shitty childhood atleast you didnt have cancer twice.

So move out, buy your own truck, pay your own room and board, pay your own taxes and take your parents to dinner every weekend. Be grateful you still have parents, especially ones who put up with your attitude.

BTW, did you ever say, "Thanks so very much for the truck, I respect how much you paid for this so that I will have something to drive."

My 1966 Chevy truck had 101,000 miles on it when my Dad turned it over to me at age 19. I put another 50 k on it and learned much of what there was to be known about a presmog small block Chevy in the process.

Sorry dude, your situation is apples to oranges compared to this kid whining about modding his truck. You on the other hand might not BE here next year with your health issues....I say I'd have done whatever to make you happy...might not get a chance waiting till your older. You are talking life and death situations here compared to a 15 yr old whining about not being able to mod a truck given to him. Not even close...nice to stick up for your generation though, just got it wrong on the application.

I know its hard to wait! but you can do it...:)
Have you ever thaught that your dad knows that he his spoiling you, and thats why he changed his mine about letting you mod your truck? He's setting some ground rules to what he has done for you....
