ya'll have turned this thread into a mess. Some may think im spoiled. My mom DID buy my first car which was a 93 acura integra. But it was a family tradition i reckon parents buy their child a somewhat cheaper first car. I modded it she just wanted to make sure it was done right. So I saved my extra little money to make sure it was done right and now gonna screw up. I had that car for 3 years. Then I bought my Tacoma by MYSELF. Did what I wanted to it with MY own money. Yes I have a good decent paying job for a 20 year old. I say either lock the thread or delete it. It seems like it has gotten out of hand just having lent vent a little bit. BTW this was my baby before someone stole it. 100_2572_d5f231febb7f6e4b49b6729fa24aa02baa7b30d2.jpg

Here is what my finished car looked like 3 years later..

I sold it like a dumbass, heres something a boy who has no respect for stuff their parents buy them. downsized_0109091224_f835b9f9b1c9152598b43bb3375d3e1ff7610ba5.jpg my first baby...

And heres the new vehicle. still saving MY OWN money to get it done the way I want it.

You're right, it IS about perspective and that's exactly why those below the age of 18 are not legal adults. Anyone who can't see a problem with that situation isn't mature enough to understand it.

Useful advice: Never look a gift horse in the mouth.

    Man.....I can relate!

I grew up in a pretty well off neighborhood in Scotsdale, AZ. Many of my friends had Porsche's, One had an Lotus, others had some pretty cool cars. Hell, We had our own Airplane. When My Folks told me that for my B-day they were gonna buy me a truck, I was EXCITED AS HELL! Now, mind you this was back in the 80's, so my truck didnt have all the luxuries that many have now......BUT, THIS was what I got:

After reading some of these posts, Im gonna have a talk with my folks......I think I was screwed.

I would love to have that old truck. My '82 Honda Accord hatch was pretty spartan, too. A dude around the corner has the exact one I had at age 17.

That one, Maybe. Mine had a cracked block, and I had to bleed the clutch after every 25 miles or so. One thing it was, was STRONG! I nailed a Mercedes at 45 mph, blew that cars trunk into the back seat. My bump was dented. AND, it had a top speed of exectly 62 mph.....Thats the fastest it could go, and, coincidently, the speed in which the mirrors would fall off.

Makes me wonder if my Tacoma would be just as tough in such a condition.

I dont think anything is as strong as those old trucks. The truck I had seemed to be unstoppable.

lol....I'm not laughing AT you...just with you. I had a POS 79 camaro that had more holes in it than a slice of good swiss cheese. No need to roll the windows down...plenty of ventilation.:D

The way I see it, it's not really an issue of whining about not being able to do what he wants. It's dealing with his father's changed mind. First he said he could, then he said he couldn't do any mods. If he had said no from the beginning, then I might consider it whining. And being fortunate doesn't necessarily mean one is spoiled.

Lent, maybe your father fears you'll do something to the truck that will cause it to lose it's value or give you problems with getting any warranty issues fixed (e.g. lifts). I'm certain he'd be wary of certain mods like painting the wheels, or everything blue, like you asked in the Photoshop thread. Some things might look good to a young person's eye but can really look dumb to the retail market (loss in value). I had all kinds of ideas when I was young that I thought looked cool but in retrospect it was a "what was I thinking" moment.

What I'd suggest is to plan out your mods and explain to him in detail what you're trying to do, why you think it would be better, and why it won't harm the value of your car. Of course be prepared for and respect the "no" if it comes. You might also explain that you'll keep any take-off parts so the truck can be returned to it's stock condition if necessary. Definitely avoid doing things behind his back hoping he won't notice. Save any radical mods for when you turn 18 and are on your own. As always, dad's house, dad's rules.

What would you get if you could? I always thought it'd be cool to have a car that was born the same year I was. Of course, those are getting more rare every year. :D

That actually worked for me. I wanted to swap out the sway bar in my car to help turn-in. My dad made my go to his mechanic (despite how easy it was to install myself), and he made me keep the stock part if I had to go back to stock.

Work with the man, and you might be surprised...
