It can unlock in any gear, but only locks in 4/5/6

    Starts locking in 3rd.
If you monitor tc lock status , you won't see it unlocking at freeway speeds on stock "tune". Only unlocks when back off of the pedal. In low speeds, it unlocks (slipping) in a very narrow speed range in 4th and 5th gears usually on the acceleration.
As far as temperature, 210-220 is excessive just for driving freeway speeds. Perhaps this is normal for 2020 +.
I saw this temps when was playing with tc locking/unlocking tuning.
Also I drove a tune with 2022 tc tables. Pretty much the same as 2017.

i would use a full synthetic fliud with a high flash point on your drain and fills. Like these:

Nothing other than literally watching the temperatures with various coolers installed. Check out what comes installed on trucks actually designed to tow their rated weight then laugh at the nonsense Toyota installs, especially given the location on the 2nd gen.

Even with the relatively massive cooler I have installed currently I could overheat the transmission with Toyota's incessant need to unlock the torque converter.

Most drivers don't actively monitor their temps and no, the transmission temperature warning light doen't count. 300°F+? Get real.

Figure it would be beneficial to have one or upgrade the cooling sytem with a bigger radiator if you are planning on pushing it or have it built up with heavier rotating mass no?

What rotating mass are you referring to?

I would say if you're going to spend the money on adding one, just get a good one instead of trying to keep it all stock. For example any of the Hayden Bypass ones, you have options for how large you want, it has a thermostat valve inside it so it actually reduces the time required to warm up compared to the Toyota one, and its a lot cheaper. Also the 3rd gen trans seems to have its internal thermostat set for temps near 200, so to experience temps significantly below that you will have to pin it. You also may never need to pin it with an external cooler.

That's the theory but in my experience having a giant cooler with an internal thermostat still results in very low temperatures when not working the truck. in the summer with road temps easily hitting 120°F I see maybe 160°F driving around, 180-190°F towing heavy around town.

In the winter I haul a race car on a flat bed, tools, camping gear, etc 4 hours away. See attached.

according to Toyota, underheated ATF is bad too. so they installed a warmer.

The best way to do it is an actual remote oil thermostat like i have in my setup. Only opens at 180F.

I've noticed that general driving my trans temp is about 90°F over ambient (20F outside 110F trans, 90F outside 180F trans).

Oops, noticed that this wasn't actually directed at me. And this is the 3rd gen forum. But i am sure some of its adaptable to those also (except for the mention of the factory 2nd gen tow package atf cooler)
For sure thats what us forum members are here for

1 1/8"X2"X3' aluminum flat . Bolt to center support and just sits on frame both ends (third picture show this best)

1 Derale 13401 Series 10000 Stacked Plate Transmission Oil Cooler 10 Row
1 Derale 1060 Transmission Fluid Thermostat 3/8″ FPT Ports
2 EVIL ENERGY 6AN 90 Deg Fittings Hose End Push Lock Black for 3/8 Inch ID Nylon Rubber CPE Fuel Line
10 1/4"X20 bolts and nylock nuts
1 3/8 inch magnefine inline filter
1 Derale part # 13026 3/8" Fluid Control Thermostat Mount Kit
10 plus steel spring band clamps
Lots of 3/8 in transmission cooler line

The rad/condenser look perfect because I took off the front panel (the one with toyota logo on it and zip tied fiberglass window screening to it. It do this to every car i have owned. Best mod you can do for like $5

    IMG_1508.jpg IMG_1509.jpg

Routing. Hot line from trans into OEM cooler. Then out to thermostat. Then to derale cooler and back to thermostat. From there it goes thru the magnefine and back to transmission. If you have any other questions just ask......

    atf cooler2.jpg thermo.jpg

Temp has never gone over 175 although I have yet to do any towing. If I was to do this again I would add the thermostat in the loop after the out line from rad and before any of the coolers. In the winter it can run a little cool (140F). And this was before I added on the additional cooler. I like the new trans where the output is actually controlled by a thermostat in the transmission itself.
