some of you may laugh but i was curious to what my truck would sound like if i straight piped it from the cats back. the sound is alright for not having to spend a couple hundred on an exhaust system. but my main question is, is it okay to run without a muffler? ive been hearing mixed things and i just want a good solid answer. i dont want to ruin my truck in any way. please help!

i have a 3.4l without a muffler. personally i like loud so i didnt really care what it sounded like but to my ears it doesnt sounnd that bad. i know you probebly dont want do do anything but just take the muffler out but changing the size of your pipes will change the tone but going to big will decrease power and back pressure then causing your valves to burn up. i have been looking at the aero turbine 2525 it seems to be like a good muffler that is loud.

ps. when i put the pedal to the floor it sounds like a million oversized firecrakers are going off and it hurts peoples ears so i am told. i think its fun though

Yeah, it would be affected, but really not that bad. It is not as important in a modern day engine unless you are forced (supercharger, turbo).

Mainly it just sounds awful. I of course had to take my truck for a drive without the exhaust when I redid mine. I just ran mine open headers and drove around for a while. It sounded like the most pissed off weedeater in a beehive I have ever heard. It was cool for like 5 minutes and then I got over it in a hurry. Go with a solid straight thru muffler like the Aero Turbine, Wicked Flows, or even Dynomax Super turbo if it suits your fancy. I'm still young so I like loud, but I can pretty much guarantee you, the nostalgia WILL wear off.

If you are worried about ruining your truck by taking off your muffler... It won't hurt anything. The major reason vehicles have muffler is to "muffle" sound. For the most part, they do not matter as far as your vehicle's health. They play into the backpressure equation a little bit, but as far as your truck is concerned, it is just back there to keep it quiet.

i appreciate all your help. i liked the sound of that aero turbine muffler, if i got that it would take care of the back pressure deal right?

Is that though? I really am not sure. But as far as I know, scavenging is just getting the gases out of the engine. Wouldn't scavenging be more important in an exhaust system where there is less pressure?

the only V6 i've ever heard that sounded good is either the 350 or 370Z, tacomas sound like $hit with anything other than the stock catback on it, i'm sorry but it's true

again, i think im probably the only one on this site with this setup. No back cats, no muffler at all. Just have a 3 inch pipe welded to the y and it comes out in front of my passenger rear tire. sounds mean. Not raspy at all at low to mid rpm. If its revved really high then it gets a little raspy. But for every day driving it sounds good.

    Too few to list.
I've tried it when I cut my muffler off. It's overbearing loud inside and outside the cab. The faster you go, the louder it got.

It will sound cool for awhile, maybe, but after that you'll hate it.

My "85" with a 22r was bored and cammed and I had just a Monza tip on it, it sounded pretty good that way, but it wore me down after awhile and I ended up putting a 18 glass pack on there long with the tip. That made it more bearable.
