No offence, but is this whole ‘TRD’ thing stupid?

Damn, late to thread...12 pages late. My personal opinion is- somewhere around the time of the first gen, trd’s were in the minority of trucks I saw on the road, and now, it’s all I see. It’s uncommon for me to see an Sr or sr5. In third gen years. I don’t have any figures but it SEEMS like more trds roll of the line than Sr or sr5. It generates Toyota Corp a pretty penny I’m sure. Either way, for some people it’s a status thing, and that’s ok, because my Sr is a status symbol too. It says “I know how to use tools and select durable/appropriate components as well as bend and weld tube in order to turn a blank canvas into perfection”

Excellent contribution! Since I’m stupid, not trolling, please tell me which components on my Tacoma are developed for, or from, Toyota’s racing program.

Yah, and my Yaris has 285,000 miles on it and running strong...I'll bet that my Taco will NEVER last that long...too bad too...I love my truck, but it has more issues on a regular basis (front windshield broke for no reason, thumping, grinding, no dipstick for transmission, low oil, low transmission fluid, AC system fried, 4 x 4 system locks up, etc...) than any US made vehicle (and I hated every US brand name I've ever had, Jeep-CJ5, Chev-blazer-pickup, Ford-F150, Dodge-Powerwagon)...ouch...

No, I am asking the question of the first post. I understand fully the concept of trim levels. What mechanical system or component of my TRD Tacoma is developed for, or from, the Toyota racing program, say in comparison to an SR5? I suspect none, which is why I think the trim level is great, but the moniker is dumb.

What exactly is taken directly from any manufacturer's racing program and put on production cars? There have been some road legal race vehicles over the years, the Ferrari Fxx cars are basically GT cars with turn indicators. But otherwise it's rare to be able to buy a car from a dealer and race it.

The same thing happened in the 1960s. The Big 3 sold production cars that could be raced. That was what a GTO or a Z11 was. The pinnacle of that was the Mopar A990 cars, which were literally drag cars with mufflers. One seat (a passenger seat was optional), no interior and they gave you slicks. They sold dozens (actually something like 200 in 2 years, 1964 & 1965).

Turns out people don't really want to pay extra for less. They'd run 11s from the factory. Now slap a Hemi sticker on the side then you sold thousands even though the radio, heater, sun visors, side window glass and carpet and junk cost you a second or more on the track. Unless you could announce to the world your muscle car it didn't matter.

So now a GTO or SS or whatever means nothing compared to what it meant in the 1960s. And if you want a real race car/truck you take a production vehicle, strip it and build it the right way.

Why ? This thread has some useful information. It appears there are a lot of people having fun with it. And just a few taking it way to seriously.
It is interesting and fun enough to have filled quite a few pages in very short time.
So why abandon or lock the thread ?

C'mon I think your stretching it just a little:). And who puts there pelican case in the cab?
I did put seat covers in the rear for my pups, and in front for me as I do a lot of hiking and fishing, kayaking.
So I guess your take on leather for that type needs is plausible. But no fishing hooks or tools tossed on my seats, that's why we have long beds  cause we be smart

Your pretty funny :). I'd say there are a lot of people with little substance to add to OP's original question. But those same people appear to be enjoying what this thread has morphed into! So maybe, sometimes fun trumps facts?
