Actually I don't believe they created it, they DEVELOPED it for their specific use, beginning in motor sports, trickling down to street cars. JTCC, N1, WRC, Group A, Group B, Dakar, so on an so forth. Toyota and Honda didn't come up with the notion of variable valve timing, but VTEC and VVTLI were developed for racing by inhouse race branches.

I think I see your point, but isn't part of branding taking the best of what you see around you, putting your spin on it, and then branding that permutation? It doesn't all have to be unique, right?

The point is TRD is a brand. It's not that surprising that it's gotten a little cheesy.

My wife loves Mercedes, as do I, I suppose. She gets a new G Wagen every 2-3 years. They are actually pretty freaking amazing.

The only 2 models that deserve the TRD decal are the Pro and the off-road imo. At least they have performance parts.

Absolutely. Yes. I think they would only gain from becoming a high tech, big dollar skunkworks for the likes of us hanging out on TW. I think it would be an awesome evolution for them to warrantee really cool factory innovations that we could all test for them. I don't know if the $$$ books would justify it, but yes I would like that.

Yes. The r in racing development. Tacomas to me as a desert native mean desert racing, so that’s how I approach this. If I were to describe what I thought “Toyota racing development” means in terms of the tacoma, it would be developing longer travel, minimalist cab bracing, fully boxed frames etc as a “trd” trim option. Bring SOMETHING from the race community that was developed for production that isn’t just mid range shocks and decals.
