Q- My 2019 Taco just had its 35,000 mile service at dealership and only required tire rotation and fluids. However I'm old school and a skeptic of this 10,000 mile change so decided to change myself since the last one done at dealership at 30,000. During this I discovered, NO OIL FILTER. So after 5000 miles with no filter should I be concerned? I havent contacted dealership because they are closed. I'm prepaired for the typical dealership response however I have the extended warranty up to I think 80,000 miles so I'm not trying to get coverage past the standard 36k.
Any thoughts other then getting an apology? I can't even go back to that dealer for a complete check as I don't live there any longer.

Yes, I will contact corproate. When I contact service, I'll ask them for advice. "I'm going to change my oil and dont have a filter, would it be ok to run without a filter for 5000 miles?" When they tell me I'm nuts, then I will tell them thats exactly what they did to me

And yes Ive been changing oil for decades. Been doing all my own service outside warranty. This is my 4th Taco with the first one 1988. So its not my first rodeo but definetly never experienced anything like this

Apology? You'll be lucky if they acknowledge culpability. If they do, I bet they play it off like no big deal. Sorry, but I think you're screwed. Good luck though.

They would have been better off not changing your oil filter at all. Oh boy. I'd be pushing corporate for 120k extended warranty for that definitely. Hard to know what kind of damage it might have caused but I'm sure it did some wear as nothing was filtered.

I'd be upset, but I bet the dealer won't accept any responsibility since you can't prove they left it out.
Worth a phone call and bad review, but nothing you can do now, so I'd just put a filter in and forget about it.

Push for a warranty for damage, never take it to their service department again. If they refuse (which is likely) negatively rate them on every platform possible, politely, and with photos to help others. Also, call Toyota corporate just because it might matter. I've had good luck personally researching the owner of the dealership and reaching out to them directly (politely) once the service manager tells me to go away. A lot of the time the owners really do want to offer good service and just need to find out about the screwups.

It's certainly possible. Would require a whole lot of distraction or not giving a shit on the person who did it but with these cartridge style filters, there's no indication if there's no filter. Obviously with the twist on youd have a fucking oil spill disaster if you didn't put the filter on but these you'd have no idea

For all those in panic mode over 5k with no filter...........

If the oil was changed with the proper syn, odds are high little to no damage has occurred. There was a time in the auto world where filters were an accessory.

Is the dealership tech incompetent? Of course. Would I be happy if it was mine? Of course not.

But please don't make the fella think the crank is going to flop out of the block next month with irreparable damage.

Oh there will be some mods all right
Purely just a guess. Someone started the oil change and then they had the new guy who's never worked on anything before finish the oil change and he thought the metal perforated part the the filter slides onto was the filter.

That certainly sucks, i'd be pissed, but not sure what can be done...its your word against theirs. At least be glad you discovered this before it went to 10k miles. Maybe they will own up to this if a stand up dealer, but i wouldn't hold my breath. Whoever serviced the truck should get a severe reprimand at the least. If they worked for me, and this happened they'd be looking for a new job.
