I don't think you hurt you engine any.
I would certainly make some phone calls and make sure they document the screw up on the trucks service record as a dealer service mistake.

Certainly not, but if it was my vehicle I'd still be doing my diligence to make sure it's noted that they fucked it up. I'd be pushing for an extended warranty here. Who knows if any damage was done without a filter but I would rest easier knowing they made an effort to make peace

How many times has this happened and it was the dealer that caught it. Anyone that has the dealer or quick oil change place could have this done to them... more than once and because you didn't change it yourself, you would never know!!!

@jlhbmw14 , definitely talk to Toyota, I believe it will be like farting in the wind! Talk to the dealer too... in the long run, I doubt this will affect the long-term reliability of the engine. Change your oil and move on.

Whats done is done. Contacting corporate, going back to the dealer to complain, leaving bad reviews, etc is a pointless exercise. Most likely no significant damage was done. Just put a filter in, change the oil and move on. And stop going to the dealerships for your car maintenance needs. This is good practice in general for everyone that owns any vehicle whatsoever.

I have done this. But when I went back to the workbench to grab the oil I noticed the new filter sitting there. So crawled back underneath and took all apart again and sure enough the filter cartridge was empty. Very easy to do. Another point for why I prefer spin on filters.

Since is was not the 1st or 2nd oil changes which I feel are the most important, and you only had 5,000 miles on it when you noticed, I would not be overly concerned. Modern synthetic oils are pretty clean and durable. By the 100,000 mark you won't even remember it happened.

Great reason why a Baxter spin-on would be a good option.

You could always get an analysis done at Blackstone. Might give you piece of mind, or ammunition if you have to go toe to toe with the dealer and/or corporate.

I assume you checked the filter presence at 5,10,15,20,25,30K miles. Why 35k?

They better give you an extended warranty on their dime for up to 125k miles at least.

Back in the day... I knew old timers that would not drain the oil but, simply change the filter and add the necessary oil to full mark. One I knew one guy that kept vehicles until the body rusted away.

    Why 35?
Because I didnt buy it new and had alsmost 20k when I purchased it from same dealer. I changed it at 25k, they did it at 30k and now this at 35k

I bet there's more vehicles serviced by that dealership without filters then.

You're probably fine but let the service manager of the old place know they may have a pos lube tech on their staff that'll cause the dealership more problems down the line. Your situation would be no different than running a cheap spin on thats constantly in bypass mode. And by that mileage, the bigger chunks are already gone from the system. Engine had full unrestricted oil pressure :).

When I did my first change at 5k, there were some bigger flakes in the pleats and recently at 10k, I saw maybe a handful throughout.

Hats off to you for doing it sooner and catching their screwup.

I don't think any real damage was done, either. However, I might check the hot oil pressure with a gauge and compare to specs. Very unlikely that any appreciable damage was done to the bearings thou with 5K miles with regular driving.
