Today I had by 2017 Tacoma serviced at the dealership, This was the 30K mile service at the cost of $179.00. Driving home my truck alerted me that the oil was low, so I pulled over and headed back to the dealership. I did not make it back, a "low oil pressure" warning started flashing, the engine lost compression and shut off (after knocking and clicking) when I pulled over. A tow truck took me back to the dealership (I may never recover from the sadness of seeing my truck on the back of a tow truck). The oil was all gone due to a bad O-ring, in what I guess is the plug. The dealership checked it out and ran it through for computer codes. No codes were thrown. They want to recheck it in 1000 miles.
My question is, has anyone had this experience? What are the chances of problems down the road? This is a Toyota so it should run 200,000 or 300,000 miles. My fear is that at 100K I will have engine problems.
I absolutely love this truck, there were some issues with surging and skipping at 50mph, but the dealership fixed that. Also the engine revs up to 5K rpms at the drop of a hat, which the dealership says is the nature of the engine.
Any thoughts will be greatly appreciated.

You mentioned the engine shut off after losing compression and hearing knocking and clicking?

I don’t think I’d accept anything less than a full tear down of the engine to check for damage. Just because they didn’t read any codes doesn’t mean there’s not internal damage to the cylinders or bearings.

If it was dry. They forgot to put oil back in it. Bearings are probably damaged. Codes wont tell you anything that has to do with bad rings due to running it without oil

The stealership definitely owes you a new engine, and a free rental pickup truck while they replace your engine!

Bad O ring? Did the dealer tell you it was the gasket on the oil drain plug? The engine died? I get no good vibes. Master mechanics do not change oil. Some kid at the dealership screwed up. They did not tighten the drain plug or forgot to put oil in after draining. I would want an extended warranty (on them). Good luck.

My mechanic Pete has a small shop and I'm able to watch him do the work on my truck, including oil changes!

    Welcome to the forum.

I would suggest verifying the issue to be accurate. If you had a leak that bad, there should be a trail from the start, where you were parked to some point on the trip. There also should be a mess under the truck. If this is the case I would talk to the manager at the dealership and raise your concerns. Running an engine without oil, can be hit and miss. Hopefully you don't have any long term effects.

A friend went through this at a Honda dealer. They got a lifetime warranty on the engine. But, the problem that they ran into is that their car would always come out with damage as the techs were pissed about it.

I would push for a similar warranty, open a case with corporate to be sure that it is acknowledged, and never go back to that dealer.

This is the prefect time to ask for a free, long long warranty

No way six quarts drained out unnoticed. I’d say they forgot to fill you back up? How far from the dealer were you when it started?
    Time for a new engine

That sucks and I am sorry you had to deal with that! A bad O-ring on the drain plug??? They didn't notice that when they put the plug back in?? Even then I have hard time believing it was just the O-ring.
    :duh:

4x4Runner is right. I would do what he suggested and have them check it all out. It should be all done on their dime.

Bare minimum, get a 100k warranty. But I don't think I'd settle for anything less than a new engine. That sucks.

Did you look under it for signs of leakage? That’s the first thing I would have done...

Nothing against females but those who don't wrench probably not bother looking under or in the engine compartment to check.

You probably overheated the internals. Teardown, new engine or a trade-in for another truck (they eat the depreciation) those would be my choices.
