People not happy with how a transmission operates has no bearing on its reliability, only its popularity. Those that don't like it are very vocal in their reviews but new truck sales indicate many people are still willing to try it themselves to see.

Sure the truck drives different from those in the past but it doesn't make it less reliable as any previous Toyota.

This is probably one of the more civil discussions.

The truck certainly doesn't lack power, it just comes in on the opposite side of the tachometer. Unfortunately the auto transmission keeps it pretty well restrained.

I've noticed in my MT, if I'm pulling my trailer down the highway, I'm starved for power below 2500rpm. Above that, it wants to run.

Toggle on the ECT button and the problem is solved. I promise!

Yes. My 2005 Tacoma SR5 DCLB 4x4 had a couple of recalls and many TSB's (and a front diff replacement), and that didn't seem to hurt the value one bit. Every vehicle has issues. I would venture to say there's a LOT more old Tacoma's on the road, than any other mid sized truck. Yes, they outsell everyone by a large margin, but having owned one that looked and ran like new after 8 years, they have my trust.

So when you took it to the dealer, what did they say was wrong with your truck? Because your mpg is way off.

Nothing was wrong with his truck. Dealer told him it was a normal characteristic of the vehicle

I feel like this as well. I was kinda surprised at how different the truck drove than what I expected. But the more time I spend driving it, the better it gets for me. I have learned to use sport mode if I am doing and real hill travelling.

This is interesting, because when I baby mine, I get almost 20mpg and when I drive it normal, I get at least 16-17mpg. I find it hard to believe your truck was working correctly. I have found that taking off aggressively, then lightening up quickly once up to speed, helps out with mpg's quite a bit. Gliding to stops rather than slamming on the brakes, helps a lot too......hypermiling tricks

It's not the same. Unless you tried the ShiftSense Pro to compare against ECT mode, you're only shooting your mouth off.

I've been flogging this white taco for three months on my daily commute and average around 19 mpg. This is the truck's onboard calculation, not mine.

It is..... no one should buy a taco for fuel efficiency or power off the line.

They've never been known for that.

It's normal for this truck, just not what you're used to.

Curious why you got rid of the 15 so fast for a 17? You HAD to be familiar with Tacomas before pulling the trigger. I drove a bunch, 2nd and 3rd gens including a few M/T before I pulled the trigger on mine to get me out of my 1st gen. Curious what made you decide to dump a relatively new 2nd gen.

I wouldn't know. I DO know at 2K the truck doesn't sputter, at 3K it'll push you back in the seat, and at 3.5K you'll swear you're in a rocket ship.

It would be interesting to drive an auto in ECT and see how it does. Never had the chance.
