I have an 04 taco 4x4 loaded. was going up steep grades coming home from salt lake city. I was absolutely not able to accelerate up hills. I would floor it and it would still drop 1-2mph every 10 seconds. Even downshifting into 4th didnt help much. It would hover at 2500 rpms and gradually drop. This seems strange because in town I have plenty of power. I do have the 6cyl. Any thoughts, comments as to where I should start looking for problems would be appreciated. Thanks!

sounds like a Toyota to me. Big difference in flats in the city vs.goin up hills.

Same problem here. On slight hills and/or windy situations it won't keep up at 60/65 mph. Noticed it when I upgraded from 32x11.5 15's to one size bigger to 33's. Made that much of a difference. But since I had the truck I've noticed a slight decrease in power over time and I believe it to be my cats. Just haven't got around to that yet. Also my wheel bearings need changed. I'm sure it's a combination of those things. Mostly tires but we will see when I get all my junk replaced.

I used to live in Oregon and drive back to the Midwest about six times a year. All of the Toyota pickups I've owned before my current 2nd gen were manuals and all had to be downshifted to 3rd sometime on the trip, even the turbocharged '87. The 4.0 liter 6 cyl '06 automatic is the first Toyota truck I've had that can maintain the speed limit in the mountains without much of a problem.

There's a far difference between the western rockies part of the country and the east coast.

That is why "altitude" was questioned--we are about 6.5K (highest)above sea level- lowest point 1200'-I can tell a power diference in the altitude.

I live in East Tennessee too, but I have thought for quite some time that my truck is a little underpowered when climbing hills on the highway. Even after a full tune up, it seems like it should do a little bit better. I still love my truck, and even though some of these hills are fairly steep, I have just put it off as a small truck with over 100k on it... maybe I have been missing out on the full potential of the Toyota since I got the truck if others are full of power.
