Toyota never said it was a snorkel for going under water to start with. They said the new intake was for getting air from a higher point, getting less dust into the airbox in dusty off road conditions.

I'm confused...it says right there in the article (and pictures) that there is, in fact, a snorkel.

They call it a "desert air intake" though which is actually much more accurate of a description. Snorkels were originally designed for vehicles running through the desert and other areas with a lot of dust in the air so that the vehicle can pull cleaner air in through the intake from higher up.

They were not intended for water crossings, but they can be useful for that assuming you've taken a whole host of other precautions to protect your truck from being damaged by submerging it in water. Modern vehicles in this day and age have so many electronics and sensors that you have a lot more than just your air intake to worry about if you plan on going hood-deep in water.

Gas engines have never suffered immersion. Spark plugs don’t work so well with the spark plug wires underwater.
