No Spare Tire or Alternative Mounting?

Discussion in '2nd Gen. Tacomas (2005-2015)' started by WormSquirts, Dec 21, 2016.

?

Is running a spare necessary?

  1. Absolutely, you're stupid for even considering not having one.

  2. With the right equipment, I'd be confident on most trails without one...

It looks like a consensus has been reached. Almost a sure thing if you go without a spare you will eventually need it and kick yourself in the ass for not having it. Even a smaller spare is better than none and could allow you to limp out of the woods etc...

I'm going to run 285/70/17s on my 14 ac cab 4x4
Was wondering what is the tallest size tire that will fit on the steel 17"spare rim that fits under truck
Would like to get biggest/tallest tire that fits under truck fro spare just in case needed so I can crawl to help if needed.

    Currently has 265/65/17

i'm pretty sure you can put a 285 on that also, i could be wrong, but i'm pretty sure you can. then you could go find you a good used 285 and have a matching sized spare. for underneith the truck i think all you have to do is bend the alignment tabs out of the way and it will fit rt in there

i'm sorry i don't have an answer for that when i went with these tires i bought a matching wheel and tire and mounted on the rack in the bed because i've had problems with other trucks in the past with the spare underneith. I do know there is at least 1 thread on here about this very subject. I know that doesn't help much but it's all I got

I can't believe there are people who go off-road WITHOUT a spare tire. It seems like a game of Russian roulette to me.

I'd sure hate to be stuck with a blown tire and no cellular service.

I've needed to use a spare tire twice in 40 years: Once was a complete blowout in a car late at night. The spare got me home. The other was also late at night, the tread separated on a truck tire (BFGoodrich AT) it tore up the wheel well pretty bad.
The spare was almost flat (my fault completely). Luckily I carry a tire pump in my vehicles.

I've plugged more flat tires than I can remember though. I carry a tire repair kit (along with the pump) in all my vehicles and it has been a life saver.

So, I would never not carry a spare. Fortune favors the prepared.

100% get a matching spare. You could put a mismatched spare up front as long as you do not engage 4x4, but you'd be much better off with a matching spare.
Any reason why you're against bending the brackets to fit a 285 under there? You might not even need to bend them, I fit a 285 under there without bending them.

That's a very cool set up. I run a canopy though, so won't work for me

I voted the opposite just to throw off the curve haha :bananadance:

The thing is though, my one friend does 60-70 000+ km (43xxx+ miles) a year, 60% on dirt roads and quite gnarly trails in his 4runner and has never flatted. I think of all those guys, only one flatted after putting a huge dent in his rim. Hammered out the dent, filled the tire up, hasn't touched it since. It's a jeep on 40s with steelies. Just playing devil's advocate :crapstorm:
I like that last quote, "fortune favours the prepared"

I expected these poll results, but I still find it interesting that most people have had to use their spare no more than a couple times ever, yet still carry them... I feel like broken CVs are more common, but not many people carry those around day to day.

All of that being said, I do have a matching rim with a full size spare currently, but am trying to find a way around having to store it some where in the bed, on the roof under the bed or on a swing out when I go up to 35... Maybe I'll go old range Rover style and put it on the hood haha

Maybe there's some irony there. :p Truthfully I always planned on running a spare, just hoped for some outside of the box ideas on where to mount, but was also curious what tw thought of no spare considering my group of friends generally don't have one! I thought they were crazy too.

I used to run with no spare and was very lucky to never need it. Now I carry a full size spare and need it all the time lol

It's one thing to not run a spare on a dedicated trail rig, that you trailer to and from the trailhead. If you have a catastrophic blow out, you know you're just limping to the trailhead. At that point in the game (dedicated trail rig) you have also accepted that a trashed $150 wheel isn't that big of a deal.

On an expo rig, that doesn't really work. When you get a flat tire on mile 20 of a 500 mile trip... tubing a tire with a ripped up sidewall isn't a good solution.
