My speedometer quit working during a hard rain storm drive. My abs hasn't worked in years bc I disconnected the sensors on the front end installing my lift kit, but it never affected the speedometer. So it apparently doesn't go off and there must be a sensor somewhere else. Any help is appreciated.

    Thanks

I know for my 2013, combo-meter speed is derived from front wheel sensors.
[speed for other systems is derived from front sensors and tranny sensors]

    don't know about the 05

when you disco'd the front connectors, did you cap them ?
perhaps there is a short now, where before the rain, it was clean and dry

No never capped them. They are just taped up with electrical tape. But they were never connected anyway so they apparently have nothing to do with the speedometer right?

They have been like that for 6 years that's why it's kind of strange now..

6 years, you sure the electrical tape is 100% watertight ?

    can't use that logic here

if a disconnected connector gets an internal short, and that connector happens to be part of a system that senses wheel speed,
or is otherwise connected to a controller or ecu... it could cause some type of signal or error condition.

no signals might mean the system uses other sensors for speed (rear or tranny)

but then if shorted, and there is now a signal (but a bogus one) then the
system might suddenly go back to the fronts and then cause what is happening

there is a ton of spooky crap going on with all 4 wheel sensors and the two transmission speed sensors
and I only know that you have an open connector, and was in the wet, and now have an issue

Oh yeah I know exactly what your saying... Damn. Who's to say. I guess I have some trouble shooting to do lol. I ordered the sensors for the transmission today luckily I have a friend that works at my local auto parts store so I can return them. If it doesn't fix it. I'll keep you posted of if it worked or not. Thanks!

Well replacing the 2 sensors on the transmission didn't work. Back to square one.

My speedo is dead on my truck too. I got it scanned at the dealership, turns out 2 abs sensors were toast, 2 were questionable. They replaced the worse of the questionable sensors speedo worked for a bit then quit. But when I was talking to the tech, he told me you need 4 for ABS but only 2 working sensors (any 2 wheels, doesnt have to be the front or back) to talk to your computer to get a speed readout. Being an 05 tacoma, you should have a spot on your T case to install a mechanical type reader that works off the shaft speed (newer tacomas have it completely plugged, not just capped)

With my lift, parrently you can chew through sensors easily so it might be more cost effective to splice in the sensor for the T case instead. I have yet to do this, but its on my debate list. Just tossing ideas at ya.
