Like the post says, when I try to start I get one click, then an electrical sounding hum. I have replaced the battery and starter but no change.

Sometimes my truck sits for a while between starts. This time it had set for about 6 weeks, and my battery was barely hanging on anyway. initially I thought the battery was bad So I replaced it, just got a click and a hum. I charged the new battery to be sure it was good, but same thing. I then had to go on a trip for my job and it sat for another month. Just got back and replaced the starter, threw a charger on the battery to be sure it was good, but same thing, one click and a hum.

I’m at a loss on this, here’s hoping the vast knowledge of this forum can help me out. Thanks ahead of time!

Have you checked the fuses? Do you have any codes?

I would check your grounds to make sure they are tight/clean/not corroded.

I’ll double check, but I don’t think it’s a fuse because the solenoid is trying to engage.

I think it has to be something in the wiring, my terminal connections are clean, but not in the best shape. I’ll double check them tomorrow.

I would check the starter relay that or the solenoid would be about the only thing that might hum in the starter circuit.

Poor quality rebuilt starter ?? I have found some they were cleaned tested and sent out without replacing the contacts because they still worked .

I would think some sort of relay or fuse. The hum could also be the fuel pump working. If that was the issue, I'd imagine you'd still get some cranking so we can likely rule that out.

Well I feel dumber than usual :frusty:

After charging overnight she fired right up.

I know the battery was going bad, and I think the starter went with it, then my new battery died while the truck sat for a month.

thanks for the suggestions, I am now back on the road :bananadance:

Apparently the battery terminals were going bad too. After driving for a week it started acting up, and wouldn’t start until I wiggled the terminals. I just replaced those and now she fires up every time.....

makes you wonder if the starter was bad at all..... oh well, she’s running now.
