I am looking at adding an amp and upgrading the speakers in my Tacoma. I use the underseat and behind seat storage in the rear and am thinking I'll be just fine without a sub. Who's running their audio setup like this and what do you have?

i'm currently non-amped, and no-sub. other than the low end, seat rattling bass, it's really not bad. the front doors are well designed for bass from decent speakers.

i lasted 3 months and needed to get a sub. but every other vehicle i had previous had some kind of stereo. i upgraded the rest of the speakers 4 years after and now i am quite happy with it.

Same, my last car had a pretty insane setup in it. Just not feeling the need the time around.

i found when i got a carplay deck it became more and more important i had a good sounding stereo. in the winter i spend a few hours going to the ski hill and back so having something i enjoyed was important to me.

Lets put it this way. When I turn my sub off it sounds like its missing quite a bit. But this could have to do with how my crossovers are set on the door speakers. But if I had never experienced it maybe I wouldn't care? I put the enclosure behind the '60' of the the 60/40 so I can still use the cubby behind one seat and an amp under each seat (seat jackers ftw). I've found a bed cover helps a lot with storage of bulk items- couple milk crates stored securely.

I’m running the same setup. Alpine power pack and replaced all speakers. Sounds pretty good. I wouldn’t mind a touch more base that doesn’t rattle and distort like crazy.

sorry my days of being 17 and driving a civic are long over

I need something loud but clear and not distorting

everything I’ve seen on every subwoofer install on YouTube are all rattle and distortion, not for me lol

I ran a Key 200.4 and Kicker Kenwood components up front Bi amped/active and it sounded pretty solid. I think the consensus is that the Kicker KS series sound decent also. You should be able to do the key w/ componentsand a decent 4-8g wiring kit for about $600 I would think.

I think it would 100% depend on what you listen to.

If you never stray far from the Bluegrass channel you might be ok, otherwise...gonna need a sub.

I updated my above post regarding the installation of a small sub and love it. I think it'll suit most reasonable expectations of most people. I feel like it matches our setup with the Alpine power pack and upgraded speakers.

Lots of people run amped and no sub, the front 6x9s get fairly low that way. I run amped doors and a sub under the front seat. It's marginally better.

Agreed. I would've been happy with just the amplified 6x9's as for most of what I listen to they do a surprisingly great job. The sub was more of a want than a need. One benefit was the ability to take some of the load off the door speakers. They never distorted but they did occasionally rattle whatever loose items I had in the door pockets and that got annoying. Now I have more down low with more volume without the vibrations.

I ran without a sub for 2 years with only Focal speakers all around and Kicker Key AMP. They were fine until I start hearing rattling on my front doors :>. I decided to add a Kicker sub with a mono amp. It is a night and day difference now. Next step is to replace the headunit but I am still saving up for this.
