No tow package Tacoma has brake controller plug?

    I have a 2009 Tacoma without the tow package. Does it still have the connector in the left front kick panel to connect to a brake controller?

    If so, is there already a wire run to the back of the truck to activate the trailer brakes? (and if it's already there, where do I find it on the back end?)

    I watched a video on Etrailer.com, and they did not use the factory connector at all. They ran the brake and power wire from 7 Pin connector up to the front, and and clipped the brake light sensor wire out of the connector and spliced that into the controller's brake sensor pigtail. I have to wonder what the factory connector is there for, if it doesn't get used at all when installing a controller.

    2” lift, ARB front bumper, steel rear bumper, Trail Gear weld-on sliders, aFe cai, 2lo kit, air bag suspension, RA Motorsports AL skid plates
    Mines a 2008 sr5, and did my own brake controller hookup. The brake controller hookup is there, but still had to run a wire to the back and under the hood to complete the hookup.

    Tow section has info on this . I have a 2007 I am going to do. etrailer has the kit, actually two kits. Only one wire to tap into on the plug under the left side. That is the one that actuated the brakes to the trailer.

    Was the wire you ran power for trailer battery charging, or the brake control wire? Or did you run both?

    Hmm... shoot. Don't remember. My poor memory. Pretty sure I ran one long wire front to back for battery charging, and tapped into a brake wire for the actual brake controls.
    Anyways, followed the TW directions, works great.

    The etrailer video I watched for installing the Tekonsha P3 on a 2009 Tacoma showed them running two wires up from the back: one for trailer power (e.g. for charging a trailer battery or running the fridge in a camper?) and one for powering the trailer brakes. The etrailer video did not use the factory connector at all. They clipped one wire out of the connector and spliced it to the controller (for sensing whether brake pedal had been pressed). Everything else bypassed the connector: trailer power ran straight to the battery, trailer brakes connected directly to a wire from the controller.
