Just a heads up guys VVT uses specific oil weights to function properly. Since the 2TR is a VVT-i motor I would not recommend changing the oil weight:

"With more vehicle manufacturers employing variable valve timing systems on vehicles
to meet emissions and horsepower needs, how well oil flows through an engine
becomes very important. Many manufacturers use oil pressure or flow as the power
source to adjust the timing. If the wrong grade of oil is used or if the oil is old, the
flow properties could be insufficient. If this happens, the timing system will not work
properly and the OBD system may set codes."

Since Toyota issued a TSB telling 2TR owners that they can switch from the factory recommended 5w30 to 0w20 several years ago, I dont think that the viscosity has as much of an affect on the VVTi system for this engine, at least not between viscosities that are so close. But maybe the VVTi system is why they never made the switch for the V6, it may rely on viscosity more than the 4 cyl.

I know they are recommending 0W-20 for these engines, but what about then they get some miles on them (i.e. near 100,000)? Would swapping back to a 5W-20 or 5W30 be justifiable then as long as it's synthetic?

I watched a fleet of livery vehicles wind up huge miles (300K was normal)...none got a drop of synthetic oil. No, they got whatever 5W-30 (diesels and older gassers got 15W-40) the company got the cheapest by the drum! I drove a Town Car that had 585,000 miles...it was retired with 640K!

    Reality: oil is oil.

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
I recommend Pennzoil Platinum, 5w20 will work just fine.

At my particular dealership that I used to work at, unless you specifically say to use OEM synthetic, they will put it whatever cheap bulk oil they can get away with. We used valvoline semi-synthetic when a car required synthetic. I believe that synthetic service (including tire rotation, inspection etc...) retailed for about $120-$160...

Same dealer owns the Subaru franchise here. I had someone ask me to look at there new Forester a short while back. It was smoking under the hood. I took a look and found the oil filter (top mounted) was rattling around. Never had been tightened down well. Oil was everywhere :-(
Toyota Care? I will do it myself thanks.

That probably didn't help with the oil burner issue the new 2.5L engines have... now it burns oil internally and externally.

That is funny. I know I would not want to be questioned about driving a loaded tractor 100 meters then stopping.
