Took my new 2014 DCSB trd 4x4 automatic in for its first oil change yesterday (5100 miles). After leaving the dealership I opened hood and checked all fluids as I trust no one lol. All levels were good.

Later that afternoon the wife and I left the house and it was then that I started hearing a noise. My wife noticed it as well and didn't say anything but looked at me with a "you hear that right?" kind of expression. I was like what the heck is that?

The sound is hard to describe but happens around 1500 rpms. Seems to be coming from drivers side. It happens when driving and I can't seem to recreate in park or neutral. I have looked underneath to see if it is skid plate or something else vibrating at that low rpm. I can't seem to find anything. Dealership closed before I could take back. Am taking tmrw just curious if any of you have any ideas.

    Thanks

It may sound stupid, but check under the oil filter. All sorts of containers have been used to catch the oil from the filter. Could be riding on your belts....it's happened before.

I had read that things have been left under oil filter to catch oil when changing. I have checked and nothing was left. Thanks for suggestions.

Would like to add that this noise doesn't occur until truck warms up pretty good

happened to me last month. 5000 mile oil change drove down the road and stopped after hearing a noise. opened the hood and theres a gatorade bottle used to catch oil wedged in there. belts cut it open and it flung oil on my engine compartment.

    shoddy work

Man I have looked everywhere on this truck. Can't find anything loose at all. Can only get it to rattle after its warmed up and the engine is under some form of strain (up hill accelerations at low rpms) therefore I can't really record an audio of its sound. If I had to compare it to something I'd say it's much like the valve train shaking on a manual transmission when you don't downshift when the toms are telling you to. So frustrated. Wish me luck tmrw guys. Oh how in love dealing with dealerships

UPDATE: Arrived at dealership at 7:55 am. Asked that someone ride with me so i could make sure to have a witness to the sound. Didn't even get out of the parking lot and it started making the rattle. Service advisor said it sounded like the heat shield. I agreed but told him I was under the truck for a while yesterday and checked everything I could get my hands on and could find anything touching or loose. We shall see...

UPDATE 2 (8:50am). Service advisor told me that they haven't been able to recreate the sound and still cannot seem to find anything that could be the culprit. Said they are going to investigate further and offered to take me to work and call me when they find out more.

I started noticing a noise after getting my oil changed around the 10K mark. I thought they might have left a tool under the hood somewhere, then I realized it was the engine pinging. The only reason I think this might be your issue too is because you said it's happening right around 1500 RPM. I'm not sure if my engine always pinged and I just never noticed it until after the oil change or what.

It was the most noticeable when it was hot out, the AC on, low RPMs going slightly up hill. 89 Octane seems to have fixed it.

^^^That is exactly when mine does the worst now that i think about it.

UPDATE 3 (11:20 AM). Just got the truck back. Had their master tech look at it and he told me that they could not do anything wrong with the truck. He went on to say that it sounded like a low octane or bad batch of gas. Suggested that I try to fill up at the same gas station or try higher octane fuel. Hopefully it will get better...at least I have the rattle on file. Still disappointed I spent $30k on the truck and its making noise this early on. :(

^^^ This. OP, ask the dealer if they reflashed your ECU or made any changes whatsoever to the engine control settings. I'd be really, really interested to hear the answer.

Pinging is a very common issue on this forum. Get some high octane gas in the truck and see if that fixes it.

I have to use Premium since I installed a supercharger, but I used premium from day one because of this issue. The Tacoma seems to have noticeably better fuel economy and a bit more power on Premium (with the same or less ethanol in it, high ethanol premium sucks teats). I wish they'd just tell you that at sale so you could factor it into the price of the truck. I'm sure this was discovered by Toyota at some point in the development of this engine. Why they never tell anyone this is beyond me.

I have a few gas stations in town that sell non-ethanol fuel. Would it be better to try a few tanks of it or go with a 93 with 10% ethanol?

Ethanol is less fuel efficient in our vehicles because the Tacoma was not designed to burn it. You'll lose a bit of mileage using gas with ethanol in it, so if you can get gas without ethanol for a reasonable price then you're better off with thatthan with the ethanol enhanced premium.

I'd be very interested to hear this as well. It seems strange that I did not notice the ping in my truck until right after an oil change at the Dealer, same with OP.....

I doubt it would be bad gas. Sounds to me that they are trying to make up excuses cause they couldnt figure it out.

I haven't had a chance to call the dealership yet as far as the ECU goes. Just out of curiosity what they have to reflash it when I change my oil the first time where are you saying they should have re flashed or adjusted Engine Control settings to correct the rattle. I will call within the hour. Thanks for all the response

This might sound odd but have you tried pulling the negative cable for the battery and taping the brakes a few times? Maybe you've got some sort of weird glitch that resetting/erasing the ECU learned memory might fix.
