Well..... turns out I didn't eliminate the "clunk" noise. Went on a camping trip this weekend and heard it happen multiple times - always slow turns leaving a parking spot. I had the opportunity to hear it from the outside of the vehicle and it's a loud "CLUNK" or "POP" that happens as the vehicle is slowly progressing through a turn, starting from a stopped position. There's not way the brake pads could generate that loud of a noise.

I'm thinking CV's or steering rack? Should I try a diff drop kit?

@Shadowhunter will you be in Bellingham in the coming week?

What about that radiator/body mount issue ive seen threads on? Search that op. You are having sounds that could be that issue as well. Easy to check that yourself too i think.

I had a noise from my trd pro skid plate touching my slimline front bumper. Not sure if you have either of those. I pulled the skid and the noise is gone. I just need to get some fender trim from autozone to keep the metal to metal contact cushioned.

My skid plate was a freebie from a friend that had upgraded so it's taken some good hits before I put it on. I imagine it's not the exact same shape anymore.

I had similar issue years ago. Only happened when shifting from r to d or vice versa. Everything checked out fine but after much frustration I changed trans mount. Fixed. I say this because there wasn't any play when I tried to move it best I could with breaker bar. I would look at all mounts forward enough where you think noise coming from.a friend to drive while inspect from outside cab might be necessary.

I would check all bushings and make sure all things that could be effected by load (driving and turning) in this case is torqued properly, starting with anything touched during lift. Cause although you weren't able to "feel"play the force generated by vehicle could be exposing play you won't be able to. possibly even something unusual like suspension components interfering with one another during the turn when suspension is at x height in stroke and particular turning angle but only then.

Hope that helps. Tie rod ends/sway bar/uca/lca/spring/ tire. I bet you probably already thought of all this but sometimes we can get honed in and miss the obvious.re torque everything from under drivers seat forward would be my next a step if you still come up short.

I went off roading this weekend with a really great group. I mentioned a very similar issue that I'm having. A couple people said that the springs in the front shocks are rotating as they compress and decompress making those popping sounds. Not sure if it's your issue but a little silicone or graphite lube at top and bottom of the spring right where they meet the mount and in theory it will lessen or completely go away. I'll be trying this next weekend as I want to pop the tire off for better control of the spray. Don't wanna hit the brakes with it..

    Yes
That’s pretty common. Look up parking pawl noise. Also if you depress the brake and engage your e brake before putting in park or brake release e brake to drive or reverse it should not make the noise anymore.

    all tore up already
The click only heard when you apply your brakes the first time after driving the other direction is your front brake pads shifting. They cannot fall out but the style pad and "slide clips" they use allow the pad to move some in the bracket. Unlikely you will stop this noise entirely unless you swap to aftermarket front brake setup like a wilwood

It's been a couple weeks since I last updated this thread, thanks for the comments and suggestions everyone. The noise was present last weekend, but has now disappeared. While I'm happy I no longer hear it as I leave a parking spot, I have a hunch it will return. I wish it was consistent so I could pinpoint it quickly. Either way, if/when it returns I will try to evaluate everyone's suggestions!

SSO hybrid bumper, Warn winch, RCI skid trilogy, RRW sliders, everything in the cheap/free mods thread, and of course the frame recall work.
Front body mounts? Earlier 3rd gens had an issue.

Any updates to this thread? I have the EXACT same issue. Every thing seems tight, wondering if it is bad LCA bushing but it only makes the clunk and full turn going forward or back at slow speeds.

No updates unfortunately. It's been close to a year and a half since my last post and the truck still makes the mystery noise when initiating movement during a slow turn, usually from a parking spot. Perhaps one day I'll finally figure it out!

A year after creating this thread I finally solved the issue for good. It was the bushings in the LCA. You could literally see the LCA move slightly forward and backward when turning the wheels back and forth in a parked position, and a single loud "pop" sound would occur a single time when turning.

Ended up buying new LCAs for both sides (didn't want the headache of pressing old bushings out). $500
Bought spare cam bolts, glad I did because one side was seized into the LCA and I had to cut it out. $120
    Alignment: $130

Happy to report that I have not heard the noise since doing the above work. Hope this may help others down the road.
