did you check the valve clearance
did you do the VSV tick mod/fix

pretty sure gas door says 87. 91 or higher is required on forced induction which the 1GR-FE stock is not.

That being said, makes me wonder if something like Shell 87 would be quieter than Costco 87. I use Costco as it's cheapest. Like $2.95/gal 87.

COSTCO gas is TopTier™. For whatever that's worth. There are also a lot of budget brands on the "TopTier" list.

That's what fixed the issue for me (if I had the same issue OP is having). I didn't notice it until I was in a really hot climate at low altitude, didn't matter what gas I put in it. After getting the ECU re-flashed the problem went away.

For me I only heard the noise at low rpms while the engine was under load.

I did have to fight with a dealer a bit to get them to do it, once I showed them the TSB they re-flashed it - I was still under the applicable warranty at the time (this was years ago).

sounds like time to work at Toyota for a whole week to connect Tacoma to their computer.

otherwise it’s $230/hr 1hr-min typically per flash, “diag”, etc IF they even do anything at all.

Thanks for the update and confirmation: appreciate it. You explained the issue better than I did and it sounds like the scenario you provided. The TSB has a sticker they were supposed to put on the inner hood surface near the driver's side for I would guess is for emissions. (modification). Like I noted previous, no sign of this on my hood. I also have a very-detailed history and service history of the truck that a nice dealer ran and gave to me one time, and while at least one other TSB shows in it related to the rear springs, no sign of this one; and honestly: I would be willing to pay for it if it's not some ridiculous amount of money.

I can't imagine it'd cost much, it's just an ECU flash. I've never done one personally on my Tacoma but I've flashed other cars. Just plug a computer into the OBDII port, hit a button, wait a few minutes and it's done.

    At the dealer.
    Dealers are hour minimum.
    Hourly rate is ~$230.

repairs are often diagnosis. Plus repair. Separate lines.

some flashes take half an hour. Some take 4 hours.

if this update even applies to the truck VIN.

Yeah that's a good point. I avoid going to the dealer whenever possible and do all my own work so I'm not well versed in their cost, nor would I like to be. I think the last time I went to one was for this and it was covered under warranty.

Also, for what it's worth, OP - I just checked my truck and they didn't put the sticker under the hood so that's not a reliable way to tell if you've got it or not it seems.

    this reminds me
    I have OTT

so probably better than factory and no need for dealer shenanigans

Not much higher cost than dealer
But actually getting something out of it.

Jason, a valve adjustment is more involved than replacing a shim on the valve follower/bucket. The follower is the shim. The camshafts have to be removed, then the corresponding follower has to be measured to calculate the correct thickness replacement.
